Screws are a good idea.
If u loose a wheel the screws keep the drum in place. Without the drum the brake cylinder will push too far and you will loose brakes (to some extent depending on brake system)

+1 absolutely. On later cars only one was fitted. A cost saving over 2, but 1 is a minimum requirement to maintain safety.

But they don't actually do anything at all, except go rusty and not come out easily.

I had a big problem getting a couple out back in 1964 and I've never fitted them since and have had no problems.

If you loose a wheel I think that loosing a drum will be low on your list of issues :-/

The engineering intent as designed is as follows:-
Firstly they hold the rear drum in the correct position during assembly, allowing the rear brakes to be adjusted correctly, before the wheel is fitted
And as Jordie explained in the event of losing a rear wheel (maybe unlikely but not impossible) then the brakes on the other 3 wheels will still function. Known as fail safe.

I'm with Steve a dab of copper grease

+1 too. They can be little blighters to get out without the copper grease. No copper grease and often the brake drum screw head gets chewed up trying to loosen them. Years of heat/cold/rust does make a very good thread lock!!!!

Cheers, Steve.

I agree with Cooperman, always were a PITA, especially if you're trying to change shoes in a hurry.

Always used to leave them out of front and rear. Even when slightly worn, drums have a slight ridge on the edge of the braking surface. Noticeable when removing drums without winding the adjuster out properly

I dont fit these screws, just asking for trouble imo

I also never fit those screws. They do nothing and are a right PITA when they get rusted in.

But they don't actually do anything at all, except go rusty and not come out easily.

Never bothered with them.

Yep that is why I don't fit them.

Once the wheel goes on, they do nothing and nearly every other car on the road doesn't have them, none the less, I do fit them as when the wheel is off, it does prevent the drum coming off. Can't say I've ever had troubles removing the screws either, but I don't do them up tight either.

Interesting responses to a simple question, I have some Copper Grease so i'll be fitting them. Whilst the car remains in my possession I don't intend to let it go rusty - or at least i'll do my very best to prevent it.

When I owned and was a Lambretta enthusiast back in the 80's it spent more time being stripped and cleaned than it did on the road :-)

Good decision. Happy restoration.
