The note through the door is definitely best in my opinion. If some stranger knocked at my door and asked if <something they'd seen in my garden> was for sale, it would feel a bit pushy. A note gives them the opportunity to think about it and no pressure to respond. If you left something along the lines of "I'm looking for a mini and would be interested in buying yours. If you're ever thinking of selling, calm me on ...", you may get a call straight away, months later or never, but they're under no pressure.

If you write a note, make sure someone proof reads it first. I find a lot of people write from 'the hip', it looks poorly written and unprofessional. If someone presented me a well written note with contact info I would get back to them. If it looks like it was written in 5 seconds I wouldn't bother.

i once knocked on someones door at 9pm whilst popping down the co-op (slight detour) to ask about a mini that i was tipped off about. i asked if they were interested in selling and the guy said yes as it was his sons who went to uni and left it. he spoke to him and i offered £600 for it which was accepted so collected it on the next pay day. so sometimes its worth knocking but as you have already tried this i would put a note through the door but then you have to guess if they have read it.

It's a true story!!

Saw a cooper advertised in the local rag, bloke wasn't gonna be back for a few hours so I got his address, looked at the car and posted a deposit through the letterbox.

Also saw a yellow mini parked in the corner of a local dog kennels, knocked on the door and bought it, the guy also had another one the garage, so I bought that one.  His cousin also had a mini, so I bought that one as well!!

Done that a few times, gone for one car and ended up with 2!!

I saw a solid looking Mk3 when I crashed mine and was unsure whether the insurance company would repair it or not. Stuck a note under the windscreen wipers and they texted me back advising that they wanted to keep it.

No harm in asking politely. But the emphasis is on the polite.

Just grab the bull by the horns and be direct about it.  Be assertive, knock on his door and say "Hi, I know you said a few years ago that you weren't interested in selling, but I've noticed that it's been sat unused since."

No point in beating around the bush with these things.

I've also sold stuff to random people off the street as well.
Few weeks ago I sold a van to a stranger.
Within an hour it was on my trailer and on its way to his house.
I wasn't even thinking about selling it either..

Haha. You must have a very understanding misses. Imagine if someone asked you about your house...
"Come on love get packing, just sold the house to that stranger over there." "Don't worry sold it for a good price!"
Haha!

I've sold her car while she was out once!!

She went shopping and it was there, by the time she came home I had a sock drawer full of cash!!

A mate came round to pick some gloves he'd left behind the week before, he left with the gloves...... And a rover 45!!
