The explorer was a bad vehicle with or without the bad tyres

easy to roll - IIRC someone managed to accidentally roll one in the ford factory car park - cant find the video of the aftermath now

looks like it has been deleted

I think suv's in a America are still tested as trucks because the safely regulations are less strict than for cars....

No one has even mentioned the fact that VAGS are mostly dull as dishwater and that diesel is in fact the fuel of Satan any ways

Well I won't buy French tat, and most (all?) vans and most of the repmobiles from all brands will be diesels.

Nice is the word. Just nice. I just don't get it personally would rather have an interesting engine then some 4 pot with a turbo but sadly that's the way everything is going.

I have a 3 litre BMW diesel and it is superb as a road car. However, I think the next one I buy will be petrol. I always feel I am driving a car with the diesel-harshness engineered out whereas with a straight-6 petrol engine they are naturally smooth. Sure, a petrol will use a bit more fuel, but the purchase price is lower and the difference between around 28 mpg (for a 3-litre petrol) and 33 for the diesel it makes little difference if you do around 12k miles per annum.

the difference is less if the air filter isn't changed at every service - could be even worse

amazing how many services only include oil filter , oil & screen wash top up

couple of hundred motorway miles in dusty conditions will soon drop a filters efficiency

& are the diesel servicing costs dearer ?

when added up with dpf problems etc - I bet the petrol works out better

I always remember the c1 petrol vs c1 diesel  real life test round the m25 . £6.10 to lap the M25 in a petrol C1 and £6.37 in the diesel. in 2005

BMW man myself but wouldn't kick GT86, 370z, GTR, Cooper S, boxster out of bed .
Currently drive a 335i tourer
That said I have never owned a VAG mainly on account of them not doing anything for me. Even less likely to own one now given that they are crooks.

All personal preference of course mearly chiming in with I don't get it.

My son had an Audi A4 diesel and he did a huge mileage in it at very high speeds (mainly across Germany). He now lives back in England and has bought a BMW 330 petrol, (despite working for Mercedes F1).

I don't know about servicing costs on my BMW 730D as I do it all myself and just have to pay for the parts. The only time it went for major work was when a blocked sun-roof drain caused the carpet to get very wet and it shorted out the 'Yaw Sensor'. That cost £800 to replace with the re-programming and the necessary seat & trim removal.

My wife has a 325i SE petrol and she had a VANOS cam timing unit fail and it cost around £500 at a local BMW specialist.

I have had BMW's since 1980 when I finally got p****d-off with Jaguars after the unreliability of my new-in-1977 XJ6C. Currently on my 5th 7-Series and have had 3-Series & 5-Series ones as well. The M535i I had in 1986 was simply fantastic at the time.

Grandson now has an '02 plate 318i SE with just over 100k on it. I drove it the other day and it is so nice to drive. The road-holding is great and the handling fantastic. To think he only paid £580 for it is amazing and he has spent very little on it. He managed to change the horrible 19" wheels which were fitted for a set of 17" and the ride is so much better. He gets over 34 mpg as well.

We've had the DPF light on a couple of times on our 1.6TDi Ibiza, It goes off again on a 15 minute run down the dual carriageway.

I partly blame the wife, the car seems to like a lot of glow plug heat, it takes a few seconds for the glow plug light to go off and she doesn't wait

So off course reading through all of this that VAG and diesel are the undoing of the world. BMW etc etc etc are crystal clean and have never ever done or currently doing anything wrong???

Everybody has their own reason for buying and running what that want or need. I use a diesel for economy and power. The fact with a small remap my CC will exceed 100 bhp a litre and still return over 50 mpg in my eyes is very good. I have been in a lift share using 330D's and yes nice car but found it cramped inside and fuel consumption poor. One was remapped to over 210 bhp so went well but low 40's or less. I do understand newer versions can get better mileage but at a price plus BMW's do not come with indicators either unless you tick the optional extra box :D  :D  :D

I use my car for commuting and each day is a 100 mile round trip hence why i want economy and a bit of comfort. If i lived a lot closer then i would buy something much more hairy chested preferably with 8 cylinders however i don't so i'm quite happy to stick with what i have.

Each to their own but no car maker is squeaky clean. So have been caught out and i'm sure many more will.

If you do a high mileage, like 25k per annum, then a modern diesel makes a lot of sense.

I used to do over 40k miles p.a. in high-consumption petrol cars giving between 18 mpg to 22 mpg average (my Jag XJ's and Granada 3.0), then early BMW 7-series giving c.24 mpg. But it was company paid-for petrol so I never really thought about it too much.

Now I'm retired I only do around 12k p.a., some of which is in my 730D and the rest in my old Land-Rover Discovery 300 Tdi.
