Thanks, i think as long as I can get half that out then the filler required will be thin enough to not be a problem, access is good behind the panel and if necessary I can apply some heat to the area so will be ok, in fact I think doing a full quarter with joint here is far easier than the lower quarter repair panels as at least being close to the door post it doesn't distort as much. I have cheated and put a thin strip of zintec plate behind the central part of repair spotwelded to original panel, this was mainly because the magnum rear quarter went flat when I cut off the flange on leading edge so I needed to hold it in position accurately, I can access fully around piece I have used so can fully seam seal it. Not sure if heritage panel would have done same but it's a small price to pay for the saving, as the panel itself fits very well.

A little update,

The pile of bits removed is getting bigger, although on this one I am bagging a labelling everything to make it easier in the future

Hopefully finish stripping it so I can survey the extent of body work required,
I have been looking forward to starting this one but know its a long hard road ahead.

Hi I noticed this project  has only One Vin Tag on the o/s front inner wing .As i got a lot a grieve from my last M.O.T station infact had failed my Mini  for not having Two Vin Tags .? does your front end have a print else where.

The one you can see is the commission number, the actual vin plate is on the radiator surround near the fe number, I am missing the body number from front panel, probably due to a panel change many years ago, but that one isn't required and on my heritage certificate isn't listed so I can't get a new one made up. You however do need a vin plate but if you have the v5 it's not a problem to get a repro one. I still have my original ones but had some new ones made up as the old ones were a little shabby, unsure which ones to put on after resto now but plenty of time to decide. Looking at those pics makes me realise how far I have come in 5 months.

Got a little more done today,

Fitted drivers side rear quarter, spot welded and tacked in position

1769c3fdecb4c3b22bd0399cec494d2a.jpg

Only had one issue the rear window corner doesn't match too well, think I will salvage a bit from the original panel I cut out and use the rear window to make sure all ok, not bad though really for a magnum panel. I could probably hammer it to shape but think it will be easier letting a piece in.

8bf9ad6e749b2da00b460bc46c198985.jpg

Then a quick picture of inside car, looking a lot better now it has new metal. I am really starting to feel confident that it's going right now.

Only other update is I have located a correct distributer and a few new old stock parts to help when putting back together,

Managed to get a little more time today so repaired the rear shelf using part of old bulkhead, and filled holes with weld, just need to grind back and beat a little into shape

Hopefully get hole in rear panel for rh tank next week and weld more of the rear quarters

You are making some great progress on this restoration. It is very nice to see. Soon it'll be time for paint :)

Spent a little time tidying up the rear today

I slit the rear quarter and adjusted to correct shape, then welded in a few small pieces

627e69236b0051d4582272ffad9a7973.jpg

Then I ground the welds on rear shelf, not perfect but much better than it was

35a1cb8a7795420cf0f8feb7222535b0.jpg

Then fully welded rear quarters, linished the welds and checked for distortion as I went, they have turned out acceptable, need a little adjustment and filling but nothing I wasn't expecting

902c7fd4fe4b30107fcd27fd64d6dfaa.jpg

Then I spent a little time adjusting bootlid to get best fit I could, am pleased with the shut lines now,

aeb456845cf23174c4aaa77da910f799.jpg

Hopefully other than a bit of grinding and cutting hole in rear panel for rh tank the rear is complete, just need to get some more panels and start planning best way to tackle the front now, the front is the area I need to get right as it really shows a good or bad restoration.
Going to take my time and get it right.

Thanks,

I have a few bulk head repairs to do, then full heritage inner wings, inner and m machine outer a panels c/w door post, inner a post panel, wings and front panel. The front panel will be an m machine mk2 spec and I will be fitting the correct sized indicator plinths also from m machine, my bonnet is rust free, just has a little dent in it so will be repairing and retaining that, so have plenty to keep me busy.
Although I actually prefer this part of the restoration.

Sounds good. Heritage inner wings I found to be a good fit although still needed some fettling and the holes for the shock mounts opening up a little but was good. Good about the bonnet mine was a bit horrible as was the bulkhead around the hinges which was one of the reasons I went fibreglass. If I was doing a mk2 would have gone standard. Looking forward to seeing this finished

Decided to fit the outer a panels first and get door alignment correct,
Drilled out the spot welds

8709c19b200a6880f676e7c5d8136833.jpg

Removed the old inner and outer a panel

9610e5b4f1926763b77ab92daef989c5.jpg

The inner panel will be replaced after I have spot welded the inner wings to outer a panel.

Then I trimmed to size although cut a little too much off one end, but not enough to cause a problem welding it as I can get some copper in behind

413225d25af052e82ef571e5bcdba74f.jpg

82962687d2b2ffbe7b7eea6ba0a83296.jpg

Overall I am pleased with this panel as it makes alignment easier and the job is also a lot easier to do

66e5569fd629a88a402d68751a03314a.jpg

I will now tack in position and trial fit the door to check alignment.

Will get this welded in next week and hopefully repeat on other side, think I need to get my inner wings next week as will be needing them shortly
