Can't see how but my mate has got away with black and silver pressed plates on a 2008 for years :P

Probably hasn't gone abroad into Wales! I did thousands of miles on my black and white black plates in England without issue. Went across the border and within 30 minutes got pulled over. Copper only did it cause he was annoyed he didn't get to book me for speeding as I sailed past him and his gun at exactly 30 miles per hour. He had a good walk check around the rest of the car to see what else he could try to book me for but as I keep my car in good knick he found nothing. Did thousands of miles after that back in England again never had an issue.

See if that was me though, I bet I'd get pulled anywhere in no time :P saying that though, a year or so back I did go out for the whole day with no front plate because I forgot to put it back on after detailing the car. I noticed at the petrol station about 40 miles from home and every white car coming towards me I was pooping myself a bit

Just a thought. If you run black and silver plates on a post 73 car and have a smash, would the insurer still go through with the claim? Or would they void your policy on grounds the car wasn't legal?

Well you would be ok up to 1975 now at least!

That's an interesting point. Legal, or not (and I've still yet to see anything other than journalistic hear say to confirm that there has actually been a change), were you to fit black & silver plates to a post '73 tax exempt car, you would still need to have advised your insurer of the modification, as it would still be a change from standard spec. Failure to do so certainly could lead to invalidation issues in the event of an accident/ claim. After all, rear reflective rear plates in particular do increase a vehicles visibility during periods of reduced visibility (i.e. darkness, fog, heavy rain etc.), by replacing them with non reflective plates you could be deemed as increasing the risk of an accident and therefore a claim.

I tweeted the DVLA this morning to ask about this and the response was:

Hi Simon, these plates are only allowed to be displayed on vehicles registered on or before 1st January 1973...1/2

.The change in Historic tax class legislation doesn't affect this. 2/2

so confusion reigns! Practical Classics' new issue says they're now legal on 1975 cars. I'm interested as I have a 1975 car that will become tax free in April that will need a new front number plate for its next MOT

Blog: Inside DVLA - What’s the story with black and silver number plates? Vehicles that can display black and silver plates

Since April 2015 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1975 can display the older style plates. You must:

  • have applied to DVLA, and
  • be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class.

This allows your vehicle to retain its authenticity and be in keeping with its age.

Vehicles constructed 40 or more years ago are exempt from vehicle tax.

The 40 year exemption date rolls forward automatically each year on 1 April.
