Yop

again thanks so much to all the contributors on this aaaamazing forum, and to all you different mini owning, driving, racing, modding good people

Here is something I fabbed up and wanted to share if others wanted to do likewise.  This is the current method for lifting old Ford Model T engines.

For the actual lift I think I would use holes 2 and 3 but if there is wisdom out here to do otherwise I am listening.  (Have a project in the can and will post when it all becomes real, for the meantime it's budget tool making)

The recipe was as follows.  2 steel eyelets, 2 used Champion spark plugs (I prefer to use NGK in the car).  I smashed out the electrode and ceramic.  Ground down the thread on the end of the eylet.  Passed it through the plug and welded the bottom.

Care needs to be taken not to foul the threads !!  Then welded the top.  It's dirty because I only have a wire feed 'sans gas', so there's a ton of splatter, but it works out ok.

The eyelets cost me a couple of quid, I expect you could pick up some scrap and do it for peanuts.  Thanks for watching :)

Best to make a photobucket account and upload photos to that. Then copy and paste the IMG code into your reply and that will show the photos larger

I just used the centre stud with an engine lift bracket off my Mazda. It put the engine at the perfect angle to wiggle it in

Lifting the engine at the spark plug holes is the last place I d ever lift it..

It's actually been done and recommend way since the 60's. Tried and tested.

Marshall & Frazer have this in their book and it's how they lifted Mini Engine on a commercial basis in their own workshop, daily.

Really? O.o

I would be so scared to try it ;p Always thought the thread was quite 'brittle' ( if that's the right word to use?)

Lean something everyday! :)

The Standard brackets from the factory were off the rocker cover bolts, we used to take them off the Gold seal Engines when fitted

as was mentioned in the first post it is Common on the Model T but there the plug is vertical in the head. and it is always advised to use rated lifting eyes.

the Mini with the nicly angled spark plug holes. i would just not go there. and those eyes.....

As mentioned by others above, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using the spark plug holes to lift the engine.  Nothing.

As mentioned by Kernow, the MUCH smaller (5/16") rocker cover studs are often used for lifting.  The spark plugs are much larger.  The load being at an angle is also nothing to be concerned about.  Consider the angle that the rocker cover studs are at when an engine with remote shift is lifted and lowered into the engine bay.

If your 'worried' about the strength and weight etc, I usually lift them a similar way to timmy, BUT if there's about 4 threads (yeap 4 only) of the centre stud poking through, I use a flanged nut 'up-side-down' and the flange of the nut stops the bracket slipping off. I think I've been lifting 90% of the engines I've done over the past 15 years this way. The other 10% there haven't been enough threads for. I'll try to remember to snap off a photo later.

Just like the spark plug method, it hangs the engine at just the right angle (if it's rod shift) to get them in and out.
