Rally cars most definitely don't have any sort of tape on their lights. When driving fast in the dark you need all the light you can get down the road. What rally Minis had were padded spot/fog-light covers to prevent damage during daylight sections, but that's a different thing.

On road cars headlight crossed tape says, loud and clear "boy racer"! Looks pretty naff as well.

The other term associated with 'boy racer' was 'cowboy'. Track cars  only.

It's funny that right above this thread there's a thread on 13" wheel hate where people are saying "do what you want, it's your mini, as long as you like the look of it, other people's opinions are just that" etc. etc. etc. and then in here one or two people are slating the taped headlights look! I reckon if you think it looks cool (which you obviously do) and as long as you don't mind running the risk of getting a ticket then go for it!

The difference, maybe, is that 13", 12" or 10" wheels are about performance v perceived appearance. Reducing light output by possibly 20% is about night-time safety and appearing to be 'boy-racers'.

The Op in this case was asking what the thoughts about race-taped headlights. the reply was 'you'll look like a 'boy-racer'. So if the OP is happy to look like a 'boy-racer' and finds it cool, so be it, after all it's his decision. But he said he wanted his Mini to have a 'rally look'. Rally cars don't have race-tape on the lights. A rally-look Mini is, presumably, intended to sort-of represent the successful rally Minis of the 1960's in a retro-style and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, why not prepare it as a historic rally Mini and go out and compete on some historic rallies, then it will be a 'rally Mini', not a 'rally-look Mini'. All the help with preparation and entering is available on here.

I think the 'old farts' understand the scene and have given the OP the opinions on headlight tape that he originally asked for......

In the future when you become one of these "old farts" you'll come to realise that it has all been done before, and the chances are the "farts" commenting here have been there and done it all before and are merely offering experience.

Look at sticker-bombing/euro/stance etc etc, it just seems to be based on trends and following the crowd, nothing seems to be "new" these days, such as the yellow "euro" lights.

I miss the days of actual skillfully modified cars rather than people just having a remap, fitting an exhaust and classing it as amazing.

My opinion on tape headlights - pointless for a road car but its your car. A friend did once get stopped by the police who had tape on his lights, the officer peeled it off the headlights infront of him and said "what is this"?? It was amusing to watch.

Ive only ever had to put tape on my lights when doing track days at silverstone as the marshallers insisted on it. Other than that i've never really seen a reason behind it, mainly as if a stone hits a glass lens and shatters it, the weight will pull it away from the tape anyway. Might as well cover them in gaffa tape!

If young guys want to recreate an "authentic rally look" Mini, surely they need a Monte Carlo style roof rack with two thousand quids' worth of splendedly nickable Minilites and M&Ss? It would save us disreputable old lags having to buy any!  :xmas:

As a young road rally competitor back in the day, we'd take the spotlights off the car between events - I still would - because even back then, other drivers parked "by touch"! :shades:

That'll be an entry in the "who can bolt the most junk on a mini competition" and the probable winner.
