My money is on the wrong type of torque wrench, been here done that. I bought a "reversible" torque wrench for this very job but unlike the link below the description on mine didn't say "Reversible with lever (only for right-hand action for torque checking). "

The reversible in this case is just that it can be used for tightening and undoing nuts/bolts. I stripped the thread on my hub nut having made this mistake, and was lucky the nut thread gave way before the radius arm.

 

For the left handed threads a "push through" type is usually needed, where the square drive pushes through the head so that the torque check will work for a left handed action too. This type can be seen in the video below, although they don't demonstrate the push through bit.
