Don't worry you're not going mad or senile.... you've been given the wrong part number!

501 comes up as a 5v indicator/repeater bulb because that's what it is -the correct part number for the instrument panel is 286

You need 9 for the main 3 clock dash plus one each for whatever 52mm dials you have.

Does the length of the LED fit into the instrument?

I have put in new bulbs and it is much better lit than before.

...ooo...so something like this?

...argh..ok I keep searching but there is a huge range that are flagged as sidelights or repeater lights but never interior/dashboard/instrument lights...would welcome an idiot proof link lol

got load's of led bulbs m8 i put some in my dash but don't put any in the batt and ing light  i also used them in the indicators lights on dash they light up blue look's cool if you want any just pm me your adress

Brian can you confirm which of the led's fit in the instrument illumination bulb holders? I've bought some type 286 leds as previously suggested and they seem too narrow to fit in the bulb holder. I haven't disassembled the dash yet as I wantedto have the correct leds to hand before I did.

It's because the 286 is the wrong bulb type. For illumination it's a 501.

This have been covered on a few threads.

Somewhere on that post I have a list of the LEDs I used from a company over here you can use the numbers to cross reference to any supplier.

From previous threads an incandescent 501 which is 5 watts compared to the usual 2.2 watts was deemed a bit OTT.

5 watts would have run hotter and possibly affected the printed circuit it is attached to.

However, as an LED runs cooler that shouldn't be a problem.

Some 501 LEDs have been ordered.

Thanks for your help.

...also thanks from me...finally got the right size and stuff...and yes 501's...and many thanks to Briancaveman2003 for his advice and generosity... top man...

..also thank you to everyone who offered advice and info. It all seemed very easy but ended up something of a complex minefield.

(...501's...raw, unwashed and standard leg..classics...*...that last comment is for us old blokes who used to buy Levis when they piled them high and stacked them still unwashed... lol .. *...)
