My girlfriend has just purchased a '62 plate 2013 Mini Cooper hatch, it doesn't have tinted windows and it has a manual dimming mirror. I compare this to my Fiesta ST with tinted glass and the auto dimming mirror and driving the mini at night is quite frankly a safety hazard with all the higher 4x4 headlights looming up behind on the motorway and dark roads.

I've looked on eBay and scrap sites and I can get a genuine R56 mini auto dimming mirror for around £50 and so was wondering if it was easy to retrofit this. I went to my local mini dealership and asked the question and he said it should be fairly straight forward as the loom should already be installed In the headlining so it should be a case of plugging it in. He went away and looked into it and got back to me with two options; bodging the wiring into the auto lights/wiper sensor or wiring it all the way through the car which he quoted 4 hours labour.

I was just wondering if anyone knew anymore about if this were possible, if the look is in fact there and the dealer is fishing for business (we had just had a fair bit of warranty work completed at cost to themselves) or how easy this is to do. I'm aware it is probably easier to fitted tinted film but I don't like the idea of just a film on the windows and I thought I'd investigate this first

Any help or comments would be appreciated. I'm in the Birmingham/West Midlands/Warwickshire area so any mini independent specialists that anyone thinks may be able to help would also be much appreciated.

you might want to try Mini2 forum as this is for the Mini while a few members do have BMW minis most don't.
