Hi everyone, new to the forum and having issues with high oil consumption. hoping you can help? Problem is oil consumption has been about 3 litres on a recent 200 mile run. seeing a puff of blue smoke most of the time on the overrun.

have an '86 city recently fitted with MG metro 1275 (unsure whether it is unleaded or not yet as haven't removed head) with hif44, running a BBW needle on alloy inlet. crankcase breather connected to carb.

I'm guilty of running engine on my 998 dizzy for the last 1000 miles - soon to be changed to metro electronic dizzy.

compression test reads on cylinders 4,3,2,1 are 175, 155,155, 160 . chuffed with that. not within 10% variation but could be much worse

breathing very slightly from filler, really just a whisper.

shes running rich ;  black at the exhaust tip although plugs looking good colour light brown. took dashpot off and noted jet isn't level with top of housing so I need to adjust up.

bore flush perhaps? I'm going to fit correct dizzy / try a BDL needle then put it on a rolling road. probably going to have to remove head but is it worth trying anything else before I do that?

opinions please

Compression tests for a MG Metro engine in good condition should be in range 200-215 psi

Yup compressions are way down. That oil consumption is very high. Thats a rebuild on the cards.

compression on my mg metro with my old standard head was 190-200

so looks like a rebuild probably not worth a dyno tune

Most of the blocks and pistons are now old and worn out now, id get a reboar to 1293 with new pistons rings etc. you know where you stand then.

Refitted the recon head back on to try it out just in case. Still smoked. Went through 1/2 pint of oil in 60 miles.

So as per your advice will have to save pennies for rebore to 1293

So now looking for either 1293 and up block or short / complete engine on good box, either freshly rebored or very low miles
Anything out there? West mids would be handy but not essential

Quick update, engine pulling like a train, oil pressure 75 when cold so over the moon :)

Few issues, slight hesitation at high revs so I think a rolling road session is overdue.

Also a lot of vibration coming through at certain rev range whatever the gear - has all rubber stubframe mounts, so suspect it may be the exhaust either catching somewhere or mounted with mounts which are too solid? Running LCB / fletcher 2" exhaust mounted on two cotton reel rubbers which don't allow much movement.
