Welding metal is easy. Welding rust is hard. It's all in the prep - it needs to be shiney bright and thick enough to weld to. If its not then it needs more prep!

Plus you need the right power settings, gas flow, wire flow and of course the biggest thing a decent earth.

I doubt I have any of that with the machine I have. It's a SIP beginers welder, 2 settings with auto speed control.

In the manual it says to slow down the speed, tighten the wire grip which puts more stress on the motor and slows it down !!!!!!

Those SIP welders are atrocious. I had one to start with in the mid 80's and i always struggled with it until it self destructed thankfully.(6 mths and i could not be bothered to get it repaired under warranty) I then bought an Einhell unit which was 135 amp max, variable speed control and if memory serves me either 4 or 6 power settings. That unit did me proud for over 10 years before i killed that and then bought a Clarke 135TE Turbo. (It was all i could afford at that point in time) and its been a very good and reliable bit of kit.
