What re the differences between the mli and the api tanks?

Is it just that the mli tanks have a higher flowing pump?

Can i add an mpi pump to my spi tank?

MPI Tanks have 3 main differences.

  1. 3 Bar Pump
  2. Baffled inside
  3. Shorter filler neck

And yes and MPI pump will fit and SPI tanks

Also due to the baffles the MPI tank is heavier

Aha!

Thanks for that!

I never knew about the baffles. I guess that is why they are recommended for performance engines / conversions so they alleviate fuel starvation and delete the need for a swirl pot?

Not that I don't believe you Hankins,

But I wanted to be sure before i splash out on an Mpi tank and pump to replace my Spi tank and pump. I couldnt find any other info to suggest the mpi tank has baffles. See the post below from Sproket in 2008

The Spi pump and Mpi pumps are different, but the tank and sender units are identical, there is no real way of determining the difference other than the length of the filler neck, but even then Rover used both lengths for some reason. I think the carb tank still used the original sender units. The SPi MPi sender units are different, they have a bend in the float arm to clear the fuel pump.

Can anyone confirm the presences of baffles in the mli tank?

So some sources say baffles, some say foam filled.

Iv always been told they have baffles. My MPI tank is heavier than my SPI tank for sure. But i have never taken the pump out of it and looked inside.

Sorry to kick start this thread again, but I need to check, I have used an SPI pump on my JDM, Mini

which pump should I use?

It has been part of a change to 5.5 gal tanks using the SPI pump. I’m now wondering if it has sufficient fuel pressure.

According to Minispares the same pump is now applicable to both:

Another interesting tank thing,  the tank that came out of my SPI has the pre-injection fuel flap thing on the filler neck and a screw on cap.  The replacement "genuine" tank from mini sport is just an open filler neck.  I read that the SPI didn't have this flap,  but mine did.  Sadly the quality on the filler neck on the replacement (high spots) means it doesn't seal well.   Been massaging it with a hammer to try and get that improved,  but thinking I'll go back to the old tank.

Spi pump is what you need.

I replaced the fuel pomp on my MPI and cleaned the tank because there was some old fuel in it, but it has no baffles inside.

Doesn't  really make any difference as the Spirit unit itself has the pressure regulator built in so what ever pressure the tank pump delivers by way of the pipework (original Spirit or higher MPI) it will bleed it off down the return line to give the circa 1bar to the injector in the Spi body.
