I think I've been given some bad advice on paint so I thought I'd run by you on here.

I've bought a compressor to do some spraying for the first time and have bought 2k paint, being told that as I'm only doing a bit at a time it would be OK.

On another forum I've been told that I shouldn't use it without a booth and air fed ventilation. I was going to be using this on my drive.

Are they right or is this a Heath and safety thing and they are being overly cautious?

Nope 2k is dangerous and really should be done in a booth with proper extraction and using an air fed mask.

I will be using 2k but in my workshop away from anybody. I will be using an airfed mask and also rigging up some form of filtered extraction.

Had a feeling you were gonna say that. Any advice on what paint I should be looking at for the best results bearing in mind I'll be spraying on the drive?

To be honest the safest would be celly although precautions will still be needed. I sprayed my wifes car in celly many many moons ago in my single garage. Used a 50ltr compressor, a borrowed old school spray gun and used a decent quality filtered mask we used at work. None of my neighbours complained but i was still careful.

Thanks. This isn't actually for my mini, it's a VW camper and I'm gonna be doing one panel at a time and as I'm off during the week the neighbours will be out. I will be doing the mini but this will get a bit of a practice run, however, at least the mini is inside.

Now, where can I get rid of 2k brown and biege paint lol

You need to be very careful painting anything outside as overspray could be a problem, if you get it on other peoples cars or windows it could cause a few disputes. You would be surprised how far it spreads. I have used 2k at home with an airfed mask but only inside the garage I wouldn't use anything more than an aerosol outside.

It's not as grand as it sounds but there isn't anyone nearby so it's only my own windows and other cars that I need to worry about. I was going to erect a gazebo around the bit I'm doing to reduce as many problems as I can.

It is really hard to know who to listen to as I have been told by 3 professional painters who know that I am doing this at home to use 2k on my mini with a non air fed mask (they do it all the time). They said don't waste your time with Cellulose its old hat.. Also if you watch the Gunman on You Tube he is a professional spray offers lots of advice and he sprays 2K all the time without an air fed mask.just a good non air fed mask which I think you can get from spray guns direct. Obviously I am not advising this as I am in the same boat as you but just stating that there is a lot of conflicting opinions on this.

Go and do a google search on H&S for 2k paint and then draw your own conclusion.
Don't bother asking the professional painters again as they will be dead in a few months.

Thank you - And everyone else - for your advice.

As I have never done this its really not worth the risk so I will source the paint elsewhere

It's better to be safe than sorry. There are so many different opinions about 2k but the proof of the pudding is reading the H&S info. You may think you can get away with it now but it's the long term effects that should concern you.

Within the aviation industry we only have to look at some of the older generation sprayers and they look haggard and Ill. Legislation has changed tremendously and for very good reasons. A lot of the paint we use is Polyurethane based as its needs to be hard wearing and as far as possible resistant to Skydrol one of the nastiest hydraulic fluids out there. There are other types we use as well but none of our lads who spray are allowed to use non air fed masks.

It's your lungs and you only get one set so look after them and of course people around you.

I was in the body repair trade for over 30 years, When 2k came in we did not use it until we had a proper spray booth, 2k paint has isosyanate in it as well as other harmful chemicals, isosyanate when it gets in the blood steam never leaves the system, the paint is also very aggressive and can cause cancer of the respiratory system if used on a regular basis, I know I've seen it!!. Using an air fed mask is the very minimum in a well ventilated area.  Cellulose is ok if it is done properly, I done my Mini 25 years ago and it is as good now as it was when it was done. If you really must use 2k get someone with the proper facilities to do it for you !!!!.

You have been warned.

It's simple really. Only believe whats written on the safety data sheet which will be available for the paint you want to use. It will clearly state what the minimum PPE is required.

Good call not to use 2K. I know loads of people who use it without a mask. It's not just what you breathe in either, it's also whats absorbed through your skin.

I only spray with Cellulose as I do all my own bodywork from home in my garage. I use a very good filter mask and make sure all my skin's covered.

Dont listen to folks who say Cellys no good, you just need to put more work into it after spraying with colour sanding and machine polishing.

You can also get good invisible repairs to you're cellulose paint job with a mini gun, a little skill and some G3 / G10 polish to belnd it in.

Cellys great paint to work with. You just need to invest some time in it to get it really good, which is why I think most peole prefer 2 pack.

My Project Diary below (Page 7 onwards) has some photos of my 850 in various stages of paint if you wanted to have a look. I've also recently bought an Austin A30 from a guy who re-sprayed it in Celly and it's stunning. Good luck with yours  ;D
