Hello doctor it's me again,

I am rebuilding my 1275 spi engine, it's all standard for the moment.  My cam bearings, the center one in particular are not perfectly smooth to the touch, can I live with this.  Photos sometimes exagerate or don't highlight the situation as it really is, but they are a good guide.

I am not an experienced engine builder, but these bearings don't look too bad, but then again I would be happier if the center one was somewhat smoother

what do you guys think, and thanks again for your help

If you're putting the same cam back in, standard engine, and the camshaft surfaces look good then personally I would just keep original bearings.

I've seen a lot worse get reused, not to sound like a broken record, if it's apart, do them. The cost is minimal.

What is the cam like where it sits in the bearings?

Hello

ok so it's looks like a borderline case

thanks for your input

I am going to put an sw5 - 07 I think it is in, so in that case should I put new bearings in too

but I have read about new bearings also causing trouble and damaging the cam

Incorrectly fitted bearings would cause damage, properly fitted ones wont.

How will you remove and refit them ?

I have seen people drift them in, then wonder why they get damage, if fitted correctly then as Dusky says you won't get any issues, also if you are fitting new parts, then the only bits to reuse are hard core parts, such as conrods, block etc .. but they will ALL need to be worked on, ie bore honed, light skim, regrind journals, even your conrods need to be checked for ovality or tapering and corrected to suit.

Followers, bearings etc straight in the bin

Cheers thanks for the healthy input

actually the original cam is in excellent condition and shows no signs of abnormal wear

I never actually knew that the cam bearings were soooooo soft, you can scratch them with your fingernail

so I can understand why caution is needed

will continue with caution on this rebuild

thanks again
