Hi all,

Just got a question about big batteries - I read on a thread that some people install much bigger batteries.

Mines had its chips, but I have one from a mondeo going spare - it's type 100. 66A 620CCA

I read someone installed a bigger type which melted the original earth strap, and someone else fitted this one with an upgraded beefier earth strap. (but apparently not necessary.)

Just wondering what the consensus is on this. I have a new but standard earth strap. (I also run electronic ignition if that makes any difference) Will I be able to run this battery with the standard earth?

I would just upgrade it but I have a long journey, going to France to make and working time is pretty tight. Does anyone know if I'll be OK with a standard strap or not? I'm not too keen on having a fire....

Cheers

There is no reason why a standard quality earth strap will not do the job, your problem if the Mondeo Is a Silver Calicum Battery is that the alternator on a mini will have the voltage regulator set to between 13.7-14.3v most are around 14v when above 2500rpm, The Silver Calicum Ford type battery needs 14.4-14.8v to fully charge and if left to discharge are difficult to recharge.

I would fit a Lead/acid 075 battery as this fits the box with no mods and is the biggest drop in available we can use, some have put in a 096 but they usually require the case trimming to drop in which is not something I'd fit or recommend.

Been running Mondeo batteries for years and never had any issues with the wiring or alternator, charging wise no different to any normal battery imo

Looks like the one I took out the Mondeo was lead acid. It was a mk2 Mondeo so older i guess?? Needed the base trimming a little to fit in the box and couldn't get the retaining bolt/strap back on, but it sure isn't gonna move anywhere!! Very tight fit. Could just squeeze a spare 12"steel wheel in - a 12" alloy with165 tyre wouldn't go in.

If I was buying new I guess I'd get the 075, but I have the Mondeo one already... for free, so an easy choice

Do it, the worst that will happen if it's a calcium one is that it will go flat. You havnt really lost anything then!
