Ages back I used a pressure washer and some engine degreaser at a car cleaning centre, that's not a great idea especially with all the electricals getting wet, but it didn't half clean it up and it even seemed to run better afterwards.
Next time I think I'll try some Gunk my uncle gave me a very old tin of it

the way round getting your leccys wet is the old 'plastic bag' trick.
just put bags round everything leccy that could get damaged and tie the handles off making sure they point down to the floor so no water seeps in through the top.
even so, after this was done, I still went round all my earths etc, and WD40'd them before screwing them back up.
