What a cool looking little mini, I do actually remember seeing this at the l2b glad it make it with no issues, ours did a 500 plus mile trip to.. these minis get very under estimated by none lovers haha

Another update where I take stuff apart and don't really fix anything
Removed the engine after L2B to turbo it, sort out the primary gear clatter and do about 600 helicoils from my exhaust hitting the floor and tearing out the diff casing bolts.

Whipped off the flywheel

Realised I'd completely mucked up the primary gear end float setting, thought it was about 6 but managed to get an 11 thou feeler in.

With a new C washer and 'the other washer?' I got the clearance down to 0.003". Then tried to refit the seal with the proper tool, knackered it and then bent the oil slinger on the primary gear when removing it .

I managed to get it bent back and the seal in, put the lot back together then decided I wanted to go to MITP so found a cheap 'runner' 998 on Facebook local to stick in to get the car to a few shows.

When fitting the engine I noticed the tappet covers were loose and on inspection the cam followers where everywhere, the head had been off and only lightly fitted and the bores had huge wear lips. Not being able to use this engine I decided that my rebuilt one would go in the car one more time NA and fitted that. I got it running Saturday night and took it to MITP on the Sunday. Stupidly didn't take any photos but have nicked one off instagram.

Cred to hertsinsurance for that one.
Didn't plan on running it down the strip but in the end took it down three times and it managed a scorching 22 seconds at 59 mph. Amazing only lost 2 out of 3 times which I don't think is too bad as it wasn't even tuned up as I'd only guessed the mixture and timing after refitting the engine.
It will get turbo'd one day I promise.
Also my megajolt arrived.

Right about time for an update if anyone still cares
Went to a few more shows last year then took the car off the road and fitted the megajolt (very messily) and got it running.

I then bought a metro as a nice daily, did a VVC swap. This distracted me from the mini for about 8 months. Taken it to the Ring and to Turin and the car has done 20000 miles this year which means I've spent ALOT of time working on it and not the mini

Anyway after out ring trip in Sept me and a few other mates decided to take our minis next year which gave me the motivation to crack on with mine again. The front end was rotten so it came off. Then i found out the flitch was rotten so cut that out and tried my hand at welding. Gasless at first which I was very happy with but got the new panel in.

Ive done a load more patches all over the inner wing as it was pretty bad but I won't show those because as I say I'm still learning
Had to patch up the shock mount also. Excuse poor welding.

So here is how it sits now. Want it back on the road for at latest June for IMM Germany and a quick lap of the ring. Turbo'd this time around.

Hows the car going? I wanted to ask what trigger wheel you got for the megajolt? I have only seen ones sold as for 1275 engines.
Keep up the good work, waiting to see this running

This is a 1275 trigger wheel as I am using a 1275 crank damper rather than the solid 998 ones. This one only mounts on the cnetre bolt though and I might drill and second hole to locate it, atm it's a case of tightening the crank pulley and hoping it ends up in the right place which is easier said than done

Now I'm lockdown for the forseable future might aswell post another update. Got quite a bit done the last couple of months although christmas slowed down progress alot. After trying to patch the drivers sill I ended up replacing the whole lot and part of the doorstep.

The inner sill luckily wasn't too bad and just needed small patches.
I then went on to the other side and patched the bottom of the flitch, door step and sill.

I also replaced both front floor pans but somehow got no photos of this.

I then dusted some white over the top half of the bulkhead and had the subby blasted. Gave it a few coats of satin black then fitted it to the car. I then fitted the engine and all the parts needed to make it roll including some alloy 4 pots .

It's very tight everywhere. I'm hoping to be able to crack on with it over lockdown but it depends on whether suppliers can keep their doors open.

Right another small update, working on this most days now due to the lockdown. First I made a start on the removable steel front. Not finalised as I want to make some hidden fixings on the lathe at work but obviously that isn't essential travel (apparently).

Had a nightmare getting the wing gaps right, scuttle gap isn't spot on but a removable front always seems to be a bit of a comprimise to it'll do.
I was planning on sorting the rear end out over this next winter but now most shows are postponed and I have alot of free time I dropped the rear subby since I rushed it together before. Always forget to get proper photos so alot of these are nicked from messenger to excuse the quality.
2020-04-05_09-10-19 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
So the new to me frame I fitted was sold as solid. I was rushing at the time and didn't really check it just took mateys word for. Anyway started cleaning it up and its rotten along the top like usual but had body filler over it I could definitely weld some repairs in but when I did it a few years ago I also did some questionable helicoils on literally every radius arm bracket thread. Long story short I have got a brand new subby coming since I'm doing everything else don't want to skimp (still pattern tho because I'm a natural skimper
)
2020-04-05_09-10-28 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
Next I began cleaning all the bits up, fitted new bushes and bearings to the radius arms and got it all in etch, just waiting for a reamer to arrive then I'll black it all.

Then I regrettably decided to clean all the underseal off the boot floor and floor floor(?). Absolutely horrible job but the floors are for the most part solid after the repairs earlier in the year.

I was just gonna give it all a clean, stone chip and be done. Then started poking round the valance. RUST.

I also did some questionable repairs in my earlier years of bodging, which I think I can now bodge better, so I cut them out.
2020-04-05_09-13-04 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
Should have a new valance arriving next week sometime unless covid stops it and I'll patch up the rest while I'm waiting.
2020-04-05_09-12-56 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
So yeah an update of me mainly fixing stuff I did badly a few years ago gotta start somewhere, maybe I'll have to refix this all in 2022 when I realise it's still *******.

Not much to show really this update but I'm at a loose end so might aswell update it.
Since the last update I've completed all the welding on the boot floor, wish I'd fitted a whole new floor now as it's very patchwork quilty but nothing some seam sealer can't hide
2020-04-21_04-25-44 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
Won't show any photos of the welding for obvious reasons.
Also got the rear valance on.
2020-04-21_04-26-06 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
Then I finshed stripping, etching and stoneshipping the floors which was a horrible job to do on my back. Paints a little patchy here as it's just drying.
2020-04-21_04-28-14 by Max Dempsey, on Flickr
I got hold of a reamer so I reamed out the radius arm bushes. Then built them up with the backplates and got a coat of satin on the lot ready to go onto the new subframe hopefully later this week if I pull my finger out.

Finally I had two knackered mk3 (?) brown vinyl seats and I needed one for the pass seat. The frames and foam were rotten so I ended up recovering the mk4 recliner with the mk3 covers. It sort of worked, the seat frame are fairly different shape wise and the mk3 covers quite poor but I managed to get it to a repsectble finish with the added extra of it still reclining. This was just sort of a test to see if it's worth trying to find some decent covers but I think it'll do for now.

Hopefully whens the floors dry I'll run the front to rear brake pipe, refit the fuel pipes and get the new rear subby in. It's a non gen one so not looking forward to lining it all up.
