Hi guys

I was using my Mini today and all of a sudden my temperature gauge just stopped working.

All the other gauges work as do the rest of the electrics, my mini had been taken for a service earlier so maybe they've caught something perhaps? the gauge was working when I left the garage though it just stopped half way back home and now doesn't move at all. I have a J reg 1991 Rover Mini Cooper (carb). I had a bit of a look around but couldn't find anything obvious.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

Thomas

As you open the bonnet and look at the engine there is a brass thing sticking out the front of the engine block... should have a single wire attached to it.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes there is, it has a spade connector on it with a blue/green colored wire on it.

I'm not sure, the gauge was working fine then all of a sudden just stopped. The kenlow fan was still working though even after the gauge stopped.

Good job as it was a real scorcher today.

Would be worth checking the coolant level. Now the car has been run and its been circulated the level may have dropped. Just a possibility :-)

Yeah I'll check that then, worth a look.

Thanks for your help, I'll keep the post updated if I have any luck.

Just an update, checked the coolant and that seems ok.

All the other electrics work, everything touch wood.

If you take the wire to the sender off, then connect to an earth point, I think the gauge should go up to max temperature, if so that would indicate that the sender has failed, had similar with oil pressure warning lamp on mine & it was the sender.

Thanks for your reply. I had the same thing also with the oil pressure switch too which I got sorted a year or so ago.

Just an update on the temperature gauge, I had a bit of a fiddle around with the wires and it seems to be working again, don't really know what I did to get it working so I'll just keep an eye on it.

Thanks for your help and I'll let you know if anything else materializes.
