the colour is still there is on one end or the other. they just dip an end in. the paint finish can be rough and mistaken for rust.

So whilst checking that you have 0.090" jets check the float chamber mounting flexible neoprene rubber spacers. The correct ones to give you the correct 30 degree angle are
AUC 1316 Orange = 30 degree LH or horizontal RH
AUC 1336 Mauve = 30 degree RH or horizontal LH

Right then. I have returned from town armed with a new 2.5mm drill bit, and it fits straight into both jets, so it would appear that I have the 0.100 type. I feel like I might be getting somewhere. Now where would I be able to buy 0.090 jets on their own? As the only places I can find new jets for sale are part of complete rebuild kits.
As the carbs are from a midget and not a mini then the angle of the float chamber may not be correct and this could be the cause of the richness. As you said you have an EB and an AN needle. Whilst both needles should be the same the AN is only slightly richer than an EB. And as Moke Spider says EB should be about right for a std 1275 or even a little weak at the top end.

I've been out to triple check the angle of the float bowls, and they are definitely sitting 100% upright, not leaning at all, I would assume this is correct? Or are they actually supposed to be angled slightly? Thanks for the help though, I'll get hold of another EB needle!

I've taken the springs out and had a good look at them, but can't seem to find any specs of colour on them anywhere. Will the springs really make that much difference?

Yeah, SU parts are a little pricey, but they are (usually!) quite well made.
I read in other's posts that the carbs came from an (Austin) Sprite. Is that the case? Given what else you've mention, I think they appear to be converted over, but just curious.

Nope, according to the guy I bought them off, they came off an MG Midget, so yeah essentially the same as a sprite I guess. It would certainly appear so!

Can't help with the problem but price it up on the su website and take 5% off it and see if it's cheaper than somerfords. if it is ring the SU guys up and ask if they do club discount, they did when I got some bit's off them.
