1989 Mini metro engine (non turbo)

Morning

Now its getting hotter its about time i fixed my water temp gauge (and move away from the standard not very accurate gauge)

Just looking around trusty demon tweaks and this is the style ill go for, and buy the corresponding smiths sender...

what i wanted to know really is...

1. what is the thread for the usual temperature sender located next to the thermostat on the head?

2. What gauge and sender combos/off the shelf have you guys gone for? fishing for inspiration

I'm not bothered about using a inline house sender if a have to, nor does the gauge have to be a certain size to fill a hole

3. Then i assume if the gauge already has an inbuilt voltage regulator, i can just wire power up to whatever 12v output on the fuse box comes on with ignition?

Keep Tinkering  :highfive:

The Thread in the head is 5/8" UNF.

Boring as it may appear, I've mostly used the Smiths branded gauges over the years, though I've also used VDO, but not for some time.

I'm very impressed with the reliability and repeatability of the Smiths gauges. The VDO were also good, but I haven't used these for many years now, so I don't know what the quality of them is like these days.

I've fitted Stack to mine for the water temp, oil pressure and volt meter. I find them very reliable and if you search the internet you can find them at competitive prices.

I have fitted pro-sport gauges- self calibrating, stepper motor type to a friends focus st.
1 year on and they are still accurate.all 52mm or 60mm.

I have used auto gauge. Work fine.
I now use all tim gauges as i like the design and easy of installation.
I run six different ones no issues yet.

I used to run Tim gauges until the oil pressure gauge split the diaphragm inside the dial and pumped oil into the car. After it happened I looked it up on the internet and found mine wasn't the only one to do this.

I have one of these on mine:

http://www.innovatem...s/MTXD.php#3852

Works really well.

I did plan on using the temperature bit for the water instead of the oil, but ended up using it for the oil temperature.

You can program it so it lights up green, amber and red at different temperatures so you only need to glance at it to see if the engines getting too hot.

Or there's this one:

Slightly cheaper, but no oil pressure, just shows water temp and voltage.
