it was at this point i reolised the bonnet was a bit too far gone. mini sport do a new one genuine for £209 delivered. so recon im going to get one of those unless a really good second hand one appears before monday.

i had prepped the door

IMG_20220602_154120911.jpg

and painted it today

the finnish is a little orange peal, but i can now flat it with some 500;s lie it flat and do a top coat over it. Ill try to get all the panels to this state, then paint the car.

to be fair the car isnt far off paint itself!

i bought the bonnet from minisport, and its here. Its a bit tight on the gaps, but its fine i think. I could try the old block of wood and big hammer trick at some point.

IMG_20220608_201157546.jpg

I had bought this little spray gun from ebay cheep

IMG_20220611_155934472.jpg

i was using it for primer, but it seems really good. its got a 1mm tip on it, its really small, so its handy for getting in places like the boot, and well, it did today...

it has got me thinking, it worked that well, and was in such tight places, maybe, just maybe i could paint the car with it in the garage at home. tomorrow i will look at the inside of the car, and see how far off paint that is really.

It will work however the fan width and paint delivery will make keeping a wet edge a mission and can lead to sandy stripes all over.I am not a painter and I have done this, you need a 1.3 or 1.4 tip in my experience.Steve..

thanks steve, well i had another go witht he bigger gun, and i painted my new bonnet. it looks a little R tex like ! Its weird i was thinking as i have painted before and i dont know what has changed.

IMG_20220614_192921769.jpg

after painted the bonnet, i went into work and was chatting to one of the painters, and he said that i just need to put more thinners in, and forget the ratio of 10% suggested. so i put 20% in and did the engine bay

IMG_20220616_193542817.jpg

I had already painted in there but the inner wings where not 100% right, and a few other little bits. When i had painted it, i had blown it off, then went for it the first time, and in the corners by the hinges some dust had gathered and stuck into some ball of stuff. One fantastic tip i can now give, use a leaf blower, and blow the whole garage out. I had next to no dust in it at all

so now going for 25% thinners, i painted inside

IMG_20220618_152825074.jpg

IMG_20220618_152832195.jpg

quite hard to do with the car against a wall. so i need to go in with a brush and do under the seat, and a few other bits too. but its defo working now. I have ordered some prospray instead of the hmg-xsc98 paint. I have used this before and liked it alot..

i touched up soem of the inside with a brush, it seemed a little grey in places, but i could not get into the car properly as it was wet obviously!

ive painted some more..

IMG_20220623_192657436_HDR.jpg

i bought some prospray paint from ebay, i have used it before, and i was convinced the other paint the hmg just wasnt as good, or didnt suit me. So i started with the prospray and at first it looked well too thin, but the more i went on with it, the better it was. Quite happy with the finish out of the gun as they say, so only a little but of polishing hopefully inless ive missed some bits lol.

going at the speed i am now, the car could be painted this year, and well under way to being back together.

ah ha! so , was having problems again with the paint, it was tooth in, it wasnt sitting right on the drop coat, i didnt like my new devilbus gun, but ive worked it out!

Drop coat was when i go to paint, i wash the gun out with standard thinners, then put the paint in, and i must have always had a little bit left in the gun despite spraying it and turning it upside down. Now ive been using 2k thinners instead as a cleaner and its perfect.

The gun, so i am now going about the edges and colouring with the gun on spot with only a little paint coming out, then its full fan full paint.

Then when polishing, i was using 800 grit, was told to use that and then goto 2000, but now as its sitting right, jsut using 2000, and its more than acceptable. Its taking all the main bits out, and then ive used g3, adn then some meguires fine cut stuff on a DC polisher.

Well, look!

IMG-20221003-WA0002.jpg

Thats more than good enough. I am off work this week, if i can, ill paint the roof of the mini, and im confident ill get it ok. Only problem is i bought a rover 111i, and its fantastic!

Bad advice in my opinion to flat new paint with 800 for polishing and that quite a leap from 800 to 2000

If the paint needs heavy flatting, start with 1500 but only if you have to.

Glad you managed to sort your issues though, that's great news

Good luck with the rest of it

Ben

today wet flatted the roof and painted it.

IMG_20221004_122227746.jpg

Now i used a 1.2 mm tip, 1/2 ltr paint. I think i should have used the 1.3mm tip as its slightly orange pealy.

IMG_20221004_132327169_HDR.jpg

Thing is, ill wet flat it with the 2000 tomorrow if i can, and buff it. Should be ok, but worst comes to the worst, ill flat it, and put another coat over it.

The finer the needle, the more you need to reduce the paint and have a play with the air pressure

My DV1 has a 1.2 needle and I reduce by 15-20% and run it at about 1.5 bar

oh right, im at 30 psi, and reducing at 30% im using prospray paint, mixed at 2:1 and then 30% thinners.

your at a lower pressure like 22psi.

you spray at full paint and full fan also?

thanks ben!

Really enjoying flicking through this project,.. I saw that you managed to get hold of the original Advantage interior - will you also be applying the factory decals to the outside?

Great work buddy

I've never used Pro spray paint so can't comment on that

I run a full fan and full paint volume

I would definately have a practice at getting the paint reduced correctly, air pressure right and technique down on a scrap panel before attempting the roof again as you may just end up wasting time and paint

Looking at the pic, the finish looks quite dry so you may be passing over too fast which won't allow the paint to flow nicely.

Remember 70% overlap on each pass too
