good to here someone else is building a big turbo engine then. I've just got to the stage of choosing the pistons for my 1430 turbo lump. I'm looking at using the cast short height omega's and then having a dish machined into them.

I've already got a decent turbo head with 29cc chambers, and i'll need around 15/16cc dish machined into the pistons to get the CR down to around 8.7:1 but hopefully the block i have hasn;t been decked too much so the pistons may sit down the bore a little to help lower the CR. i'm only looking at running 15psi through the engine so no need to go stupidly low with the CR like my 1293 engine was.

Have a play with www.afracing.com/cr.xls Its a brilliant little spreadsheet made by AlexF2003 off here, thats what i used to find out what dish i'll need in me pistons.

Hey this thread looks like a good one to keep an eye on, I wish you the best of luck, one thing you may want to read is the book by david vizard (tuning the a seris engine), he came up with a good line " the point of the exersise is not to create boast, but horse power" he also talked alot about keeping things cool. I also have a pile of idea (I almost bought a T3 turbo unit yesterday, but there was too much shaft play :'( )

Best of luck mate

bud,

I believe I've got the engine that you nearly bought from jammy.
Are you going to use an ECU with injection or Hif44 ?

If we are working on similar specs its feasible that if there is something we both need we may be able to get a better price by buying pairs?

Did you get people looking at you as if you were barking mad for considering a big blown A series ?

Thanks for the feedback - glad to see I'm not the only nutcase out there.

thanks yeti - you're right, vizard definately seems to make sense - horsepower and torque - not just psi !!

I will start uploading pictures of the bits that are coming together in the next day or so. Mirage pipe kit arrived this morning and I'm very keen to get the T2 strapped to it ASAP.

thanks jammy - PS what happened to the forum last night? I kept getting a screen saying that it had been suspended and someone ought to contact the host's accounts department or something.
Did they need to stick another 50p in or what? ;D

Yea, not sure, I kept getting a error message saying the server couldn't be found, so I guess they just had to change the batteries!

Yeah i was interested in it but it was just too much pennies as i only wanted the bottom end. I've picked up a fresh 73.5mm A series bottom end now for £70, just fetched a set of S rods aswell and got another set on the way. all i need now is a set of pistons and to have my crank offset ground. I'll be getting all my machining done by simon @ morspeed, can't fault the bloke after having my 1293 engine kit off him a couple of years ago.

I'll be running it on the turbo HIF44, didn;t have any problems running it on me 1293 turbo and i know its good for waaaay over 200hp. The efi is just too awkward to sort out on a 5 port head in my opinion. I'll be using my megajolt ECU to control my ignition though.

Surprisingly the only people who look at you like a fool when you say you're building a big bore turbo are the ones who don't post on turbominis, there's loads of people on there running 1380 turbo's already with great success. All this talk of bore flex is unfounded imo, the blocks made of iron not paper ffs, lol.

Good luck with the build dude, mine should be ready around christmas time hopefully depending on funds. Already got everything i need from my last engine except for pistons and the stroked crank.

Aye, I agree with Bud on the bore flex, the block has the same bore as a 1380, and has been offset bored, so there is plenty of meat between the bores.

here we go then - first pictures of shiny bits !

here is the turbo all spangly and new, and the mirage kit that arrived this morning.
Mirage kit in itself is quite neatly done but was plastered in black paint - an execise in stopping it rusting while its on the shelf waiting to be sold I guess - cleaned some of the overspray off only to find it was pretty rusty already.

I'll clean it up tonight and give a lick of something to stop the rust kicking in before it gets finished.

I'll try and upload a couple of pics of the car its going into as well tomorrow.

;D

Looks very nice. Good to see someone deciding on keeping an a-series engine and not commiting to the engien swaping of a vtec or vauxhall conversion.

Good work my friend ! ;D

that mirage stuff is a really good piece of kit.

bit of a warning though, its a right fiddly ;D job getting it all fitted. plus you've got to swap the actuator over, make a bracket for that, make a bracket to hold the downpipe away from the pot joint, rotate the compressor housing, make an oil drain, sort out the water connections.

It's definately worth it though, my mates got the mirage setup and T2 on his 1293 and it goes like stink.

take the head off and start measuring stuff is the only way. you'll need to know the deck height, head chamber size, piston dish, ringland volume, gasket volume.

basically everything in alex's spreadsheet that i posted the link to up there^^^ somewhere, you'll need to measure a value for.
