Just been out in my mini (has A032R's  ) they're alright in the snow haha! My dads Bora is completely stuck and my mini got straight out. Poor thing though, looks as though I've been rallying with it and the arches are full of slush.

No way am I putting my mini out in the salt..... no matter how much fun it is... took the daily hack  - altea "sport" (as if!) diesel out this morning as I had to no choice but to get to work.....dropped tyres pressures 10lb and  a bit of care low gear anticipation and smooth lines  all fine on summer stupidly low profile tyres - traction control / abs didn't come into play once.........ironically the cruise control was quite useful at keeping things steady.......just about the only car on the road....

BMW 320 passed spinning away merrily and all over the shop......not a clue... and  (I assume 2wd)  Kuga  getting in all sorts of panicked trouble.........

Now safely back home watching the neighbours make a mess of trying to get out ......

How many remember the days of Jan, Feb & March 1963. This is nothing compared to that Winter when the cold went on like for ever. Lots of pictures of the 'big-freeze of 1963' on Google.

We sure learned to drive in the snow back then.

Yes, I have photos of me in 1963 with huge banks of snow all along the roadside in south London......and we still had to walk to school (in shorts) regardless, they rarely shut schools because of snow back then!

used to love driving my e30 in the snow, 325 you could just steer it with the back so controllable, current daily is a 330 feels so bulky and heavy, all over the place!

I had an E30 325 Sport and I bought a set of narrow 316 steel wheels and fitted 165 section Colway forest tyres for the snow. With a bit of added weight in the boot it went well and felt very safe in the snow.

Yeah definitely felt more planted than the 330 i have atm, think i just had the standard 15" bbs with summer tyres and it still poodled along fine albeit with a few tailhappy moments half asleep on the way into uni in the morning, that wakes you up better than coffee!

In general BMW's are not ideal in snow compared to some other rear wheel drive cars. I had a Mk.2 Jaguar XJ6 in the 1970's and that was good in snow as was a Granada 3.0 I once had. When I got my first 7-Series in 1980 I bought a set of steel wheels and fitted Dunlop SP66 IceGrip tyres. They were fantastic.

A Mini on 145 section 'knobbly' tyres is very good on snow and ice. The problem with my 'S' rally car is that even on knobbly tyres, in the snow it is difficult as it will not work at low revs and when you put, say, 2800 rpm on to get it on the cam the wheels spin, but at below 2800 rpm it is too lumpy to drive smoothly.

Remember, if you can't get up a slippery hill in your Mini, turn round and go up in reverse. That often works.

ive got a couple of 20 year old rovers as daily drivers. (200/400)

last night we were due to go to a friends house for a curry night with a gathering of people. despite being told not to make any un-necessary journeys, and some friends who live in the area of our destination messaging saying the roads were so unpassable, they had abandoned their cars, we went anyway!

let the front tyres down a little, and had no difficulty at all, infact we passed a modern 4x4 on a hill who had all four wheels spinning and was getting no where.

come 1am we were ready to leave and despite it taking 3 attempts to get up the hill and out of the cul-de-sac where we had been to see our friends, we got back just fine. basically, I think the standard of driving of many on the roads, combined with the over/lack of confidence in their driving abilities are why so many struggle in what was in our area just a few inches of snow. load of fuss over nothing.

theres a fellow down by us stacked his TVR Cerbra into a drystone wall up near the local campsite yesterday - what the hell was he doing out in that??  Apparently Mr Evans was pulling the TVR out with his landy and the guy was saying "watch the bloody bodywork!" he must have been in shock because the front end and the drivers door looked like it had been panel beaten with a bag of hot 50 pence pieces ........funny, i had a girlfriend who looked like that once bless her. Lovely girl but you wouldnt want to bump into her down a dark alley.
