Planning my engine build with the help of the yellow bible. I'm deciding on what carb to go with, whether to get a ram pipe and also what air filter to go for. All I know at the moment is that a 40DCOE would probably require bulkhead modification and is probably overkill for a 1275.

The only thing I'm definitely getting at the moment is an MED sub stack.

Cheers,

Will

Would you recommend twin carbs? I've heard that an HIF44 is also good

It depends what you're trying to achieve but I'd stick with a single SU for good power and economy,  HIF 4 for mild tune and HIF 6 for a hotter motor.

If you're getting an MED stub stack then you don't need a ram pipe.

Air filter choice depends on what sort of noise/looks you like.

Standard 998 or 1275 with stage one kit, they have HS4(one 1275 has a HIF 38) 2 cars run KnN cone filters, the other is a KnN in the standard air box

a single HIF44 will do everything that you need and more. vizzard it if you want. and fit a KN filter in the standard housing and Calver that. the Maniflow steel inlet is very good as is the Minispares alloy one.

My friend has a slightly modified 1275 and had the below:
Twin HS4
Downdraft IDF 45 Weber on RE manifold
Dellorto 40 (essentially a 40DCOE) on a redline manifold
HIF44 with minispares manifold
HIF44 with 7” RE manifold
Of all the different combinations the HIF44 was probably the simplest and best for daily driving. BUT the Dellorto 40 was definitely the most fun to drive and made the best noises. For a weekend car I’d personally pick the Weber/Dellorto 40

A single HIF44 preferably Vizarded will be the best option with a stubstack and a conventional K&N offset type, the cones are not the best.

A 40 DCOE is not really overkill on a 1275, even in a mild state of tune but needs an airbox and manifold of at least 5 inches to be a fraction better than the HIF44, and even then probably only over 4k revs.

But a Weber will always win the best noise  on the planet competition, especially with a straight cut box.

a bit like the above back in the late 80s early 90s i went through a number of carbs on a 1380 with a 286 cam and a worked head but nothing special.

 twin HS4s Visarded.

28-32 DCD

Dellorto  40

Weber 45

all with suitably modded inlets and correct lengths with Air box ram pipes etc and Rolling road set up

and you know what you cant beat an HIF44 for road use. well you can with a proper full injection system.

oh often the Weber can be louder than the exhaust.

1293 running MD266 with Minispares 1.5 forged rockers.

Vizarded Twin HS2s on steel inlet manifold, standard elbows and pair of K&N cone filters fitted upside down with top of air filter case to hold it all together. Just clears bonnet.

I run an HIF44 with K&N filter on my mildly tuned 1275, and it's absolutely bloody brilliant. I used to have twin 1 1/4" SU's and they were hateful things, never want to see them again in my life lol

Looks like I'm getting an HIF44 then. Slowly building up my list of parts!
