I have not pulled the pipe but I will if it means something.
I don't have a vacuum gauge but I could buy one. What do you want me to test ?

Hi,
If you have sticking valves or not seating properly they can be diagnosed with a vacuum gauge and the engine running.
I wanted to know if the FPR was leaking petrol into the vacuum pipe which will obviously put more fuel into the inlet manifold.
Anything to report with the head off?
What colour are the chambers in the head and the pistons?
Are they all the same? Any strange patterns in the deposits
If you've taken the manifolds off what do the portd in the head look like?
You could take the valves out and inspect/lap them in while the head is off if you didn't last time?
Cheers

I'm back on the mini and have just removed the inlet manifold. I'm going to check and double check everything.
Took the throttle body off and found this gunk. Anyone know what's causing it and if this is the reason why my emissions are high ?

Thanks

is that oil?
would explain emission problems if it is

So, if I stop the engine breathing going into the inlet would my emissions improve ?
How would I stop it though ? Just block off the breather pipes ? Leave them open into the atmosphere ? Its only for the MOT. After I get it, the car's being dismantled.

on the left side of the picture it seems you see the piston rings grinding the metall. If this is true one or more rings are broken and this piston is pumping oil. Burned oil may cause higher O2.

Genpop, its a picture of the inlet manifold !!!!
uuh, didn't read text to picture exactly. never seen oil on the throttle, are you shure your timing (timing chain) is set right?

It can only be oil. What else could it be ?.

Hi,
Yes leave them to atmosphere, but plug the holes left behind on the inlet manifold.
Also give the manifold a damn good clean out.
Once you've got it running see how much is coming from the breathers.
It maybe the engine was breathing heavily but has had a rebore but they didn't clean up properly after rebuilding the engine?

If I'm understanding correctly, any air getting into the exhaust gasses before they get to the lambda would cause rich running. I can't see where any air is /would be getting in.
What else would cause rich running ?
I've not yet checked fuel pressure, no idea how to go about doing it, but the return petrol pipe is full of fuel.
I've tested the injectors and they squirt as should.
All this rich running, especially before, when I had a MAP wiring problem and the car was bellowing out black smoke, has obviously damaged my cat. I don't want to put a new one on until I can get the mixture right.
Any ideas anyone ?
Pete.

have you done a leak down test yet?
