change of plan....this may well go tits up but ime going to go front mounted motor with rear wheel drive so ime looking at possible options

mx5  use both subframes but  linked front and back with a box section ladder chassisthat will be welded to the box sectiomn inner cills i have fitted todayand when time comes   i already have a wide fortec  body kit to cover the wheels ect or i will make the wide body i already mentioned

vauxhall red top   i know you can mount these for front wheel drive and i have one here with twin 45s ect   and all speed subframe but ide like to go rear wheel drive the boot ect is rotten as a pair so i dont care about chopping the bejezuz out of it  i just need to figure out  a rear end set up   so will be trawling thro the other projects page to find a few clues  was thinking of a sierra rear end narrowed or something along those lines   so far i have welded 75x50 box section along/underneath the door steps rear quarters ime planning to  beef up the A and B pillars internaly with either box section 25mmx25mm  welded to the large box everything just tacked in place  in case i need to alter things  regards running gear depends what comes up at the right money tho may have an mx5 for 150 quid  at the end of the week mot failure

its a fair comment but i will put it through the test when time comes if binky can be made road legal i dont see why this cant

although i think its ridiculous i think if you an build it to a good standard with good welds  and a well thought out design ect and it passes the mot that should be end of story  ive seen loads of subjects where with a bulkhead air box or a flip front deseaming ect ect . you need an iva sva/biva  i dont mind a q plate to be honest

so i have drilled a  25mm hole  in the 80x40x2 box section  top at the centre of the a post and B  post i will run either box section or 25 mm [or there abouts] ...25.4mm i just checked rollcage tubing up the A and B pillars to further tie the shell to the box section should be extremely stiff and strong

now on the A pillar the tube   can only go up to the middle as it gets very thin inside the windsreen /boxing plate section at the top  so unless i redesigned the boxing plate   it would have to turn 90 degrees at the halfway point maybe tie it into a 38 mm rollcage tube thats in the conventional position we shall see . the b post is a similaire story  due to the door lock striker plate set up the cant rails can be cut down a little   would be cool if i could work a way to pass a small diameter tube cage  up both A and B posts and around the cant rails /stiffeners and keep it relatively hidden closed in  this is just a bit of fun seeing what i can do whats possible

not up to date pics as ive done quite a bit since these were taken but thought i would put them up before deleting frm my phone  gives an idea this is mocking up    since these its been welded in place ect as previously stated will get pics later today if i get two min

the A post is welded around the bottom directly  to the box had to nip 20 mm ish of the bottom so it sits flush  then has tube tacked in place ready to be fully welded [tho to be honest it really doesnt need it as its rock solid as is]

the b post has the tube  up the post and welded to the box as well

the box i  have used is 75x50 mm thats the available space from the underside  of the door step to the lowest corner of the inner cill/floor

i folded some15mmx20mm 1.2 sheet steel  to spot weld along the  door step lip as per original  then onto the top of the box section  the opposite side is a mirror image  anything  regards engines subframes  i end up using  will be tied into these box sections should i need to  nd if i stick with a conventional  fwd then the  boxes are extremely strong and stiff  and can stay in place

oh before i forget in the ext size box  i have it only comes in 3mm wall wich is a little bit heavy  i wanted 2 mm   after looking at loads of different places i gave up and got it put on a milling machine and had 1 mm  machined off  the outer face for the full length they also took a small scollop out of the top where the little depression is in the door step so the box would sit up as tight as possible  a little ott maybe but cost me a beer  and i dont want it to be stupidly heavy

and i should add ive made new inner cills to suit these boxes they are as follows 75mmx80mmx30 mm allowing for the 20 mm further  that the box section sticks out inside the car the others were 90x100x30 ps if anyone wants inner sills up to the first flute   made give me a shout  i can fold them  anything from 0.9 up to 2.5 mm  and up to 1.5 mtres in length

the cheap mx5 has fallen through i do have the opportunity to get a full sierra xr4 rear subframe polybushed and painted for a good price  the engine i have already has a manta sump and i think i can use a manta box or a type 8 ford with correct bellhousing wich would suit the rear endso if they do come off it wll be rear wheel drive vauxhall cat find much info on thevauxhall rwd conv

+at the moment

There should be information out there as these used to fitted into Caterhams, I’ve also definitely seen them fitted in Mantas.

say hello to my  chassis for the mini  will need to be shortened not by that much really

but its narrow at the centre rails and the strut tops the rest can be worked with

so will shorten it  add some nice gussets  remove some unwanted  bits and preety it up   then get it blasted ime not to woried about the width difference of the axle i like the look of a wide  mini i it will run 13s wich is ideal  and i have the fortec kit and or  i  may make the steel box arches previously mentioned so thats not a concern
