Today I made the first panel. I think it's gonna work.

Fair play to what you are doing and its looking good.

I have to say if you add up all the time you have spent on doing this, it will amount to far more than what it would have cost for a replacement Heritage item.

BUT plaudits for doing this sort of thing. It just goes to show what we can do for our little cars and the steps we will take to keep them on the road.

Well, I started the first long-beam but I am not so satisfied with the shape of the cone  :shy: It is pretty hard work forming a 1.5mm sheet metal.

So I formed it from an other piece and I will weld it to its place.

Not happened too much as I have to rethink the templates.

And I experienced some more to repair :

I made a new end piece from a thicker material. First I made it from 2 mm hollow section, but it seemed too thin. So I created it from 3mm section instead. Also I formed the room for the radius arm with the help of a tube.

Next I'll have to drill the holes for the support pin and the piece is ready for the final welding into its place.

once bought a replacement rear subframe that was from the aftermarket, never again, it took lots of work to get things trued up to where I could use it.

You are doing a great job.

I do wonder if mini subframes were over engineered, especially when compared to a metros rear subframes.
But brilliant work.

I too wonder about overengineering. We see photos of very rusty cars and still they keep driving, admittedly they may not be safe but still they keep going. When fitted in place you could probably drive with no fastenings until you became airborne. When out in my classics I doubt that newly fitted sills offer much protection from a lorry or errant SUV or is that old age thing making me nervous?Steve..

I agree. You don't want to be hit by a modern car when out in your mini. You'll get squashed to death.

I'd like to ask you a little advice. Today I "assembled" the left side for testing and there is one thing that I don't see clearly. Look at this top-view sketch. The blue line is the outer beam which is in an angle compared to the inner beam. But they are spot welded to each other where the radius arm inner support is. So it gives a flat area there, like you see it on the right side.

I just liked to seehow "big" is that flat area. I mean where the outer beam bended for the angle ? Could you take a photo foe me of your car ?

Logically I should bend it where I draw the red line on the picture but there was spot welds further back on the beam.
