recently tried to order a pair from one of the few sites that list them and got a call back to advise that the CIBIE 7" with sidelight are now obsolete  :(

there will doubtless still be some old stock out there but you'll need to be patient and prepared to pay a premium to get hold of a set

Well that's unfortunate.  Can you still get the non-sidelight versions as it should be fairly easy to add a sidelight?

not sure about that as was only interested in the sidelight version.

valeo still show the H4 7" cibie oscar driving lamps in the range, so i assume they still manufacture those lenses.  whether they retail the lenses by themselves is another matter...

You should watch the Youtube videos from a company called Headlight Revolution. They test a bunch of LED 7" and replacement H4 LED bulbs in the standard lens. Probably the best info on LED lighting you'll find. They show you in real beam patterns that not all LEDs are created equal. I have Wipac Quadoptic 7" with Morimoto 2Stroke 2.0 LED bulbs in them, they have a really nice bright beam and a distinct cutoff so you don't blind oncoming drivers, not cheap but to my eyes worth it. I only wish I had found Headlight Revolution before I bought the Morimotos, they had better results with GTR Ultra 2, one advantage of the Morimoto LED is they have very low current draw. Headlight Revolution also has a great video on aiming the lights which also improved the usable light from my set up.

I have the Wipac Crystal clear 7" units and was thinking of fitting the H4/9003: GTR Ultra 2.

As, on the mini, the headlamp units are fitted inside a plastic bowl, do you need to provide extra vents through the bowl to get airflow to the heatsink/fan?

I didn't feel the need to with the Morimoto it fit inside and didn't want road grime getting to it. Interesting side note is you can hear the fans on the LEDs running when the lights are on with the car off, sort of a chime to remember to shut them off.

A good set of ECE Hella or Cibie 7" round halogen housings, a pair of 55w/100w H4 Osram, Flösser, Narva, or Hella bulbs working with headlight relays and 12 or 14 gauge wire will provide great lighting, and the whole thing will probably run you maybe £100...The relays will also prolong the life of your headlight switches.

That said, if you really want LED, Truck Lite and JW Speaker make the best if you're taking into account oncoming drivers and laws. Morimoto has a good reputation for brightness and "cutoff", but retrofitting is a bit dodgy (particularly when certified lamps are now sold). KC Hilite has a nifty 7", but it's not actually legal anywhere, which leads me to believe it's output/beam haven't been vetted independently, which erodes my trust.

Be aware that some LED headlights don't put enough heat onto the glass to melt snow without a dedicated heating filament..

Definitely don't put an LED bulb in an H4 housing...and remember to aim them properly (professionally), whatever you do...
