If you have a plastic spacer block between the carb and manifold, they sometimes split giving an ultra lean mixture... have you tried driving with the choke out??
to be honest I would take it to a rolling road if you can and explain the situation... they shouldn't have to rev the nuts off to find the problem, then once you they are happy to, they can do the full tune.
I know my local place are really good like that

There IS a carb spacer block, the only thing is the studs are too long to remove that block.

check there are no split pipes, particularly the ones from the carb to the breathers if theyre still on. if not, the connections for them on the carb should be blocked

You could fit some different studs, or cut them down.
However, if the spacer plate is fitted it only lengthens the intake by 12mm or so, so will only have an effect on throttle response of microseconds, and slightly change the wave effects.
It sounds to me like you've got an air leak, possibly a gasket not sealing properly, you shouldn't need to use hylomar, infact it's probably best if you don't.
Instead make sure all the mating surfaces are clean and so on.
Also have you got a brake servo vacuum pipe on the inlet manifold? Is this either fitted or properly blocked off? I can't remember what inlet manifold you said you had, but I've an MG one and had to block the brake servo and vac advance pipes on it.
Hope you find it soon!

Yes, I've got a torquemaster manifold and the vacuum is connected onto that properly.
After fiddling around with it all day managed to get it driveable at low speeds, it struggles pulling off on hills and loses quite a bit of speed on hills now. But it's not actually dying other than that.
Still getting that hissing noise as it's losing power though. (I think it's induction noise)

sounds like shes running lean!! som engines require more fuel than others so i guess the aaa or aau mite not suite all bolt on stg 1 applications!!

be more of a flat spot than a boggin down would it not.

depends how lean it was!! but having said that timing may be too retarded also!! always hard to say on here as im not actually in the car!!
rolling roads are the way to go!! just make sure its a good one! not a monkey outfit!!
