Hi, I am fitting my radius arms after replacing the rear subframe. After fitting the pin through the hole in the subframe, when I go to fit the spring washer and nut in the inside I found even when tight the nut is only half way down so no threads protruding (see photo).

The thrust washer is installed against the radius arm on the the inner and outer sides of the arm. The radius arm brackets are lined up and the thrust washer flat against the frame.

I thought I would fit the pin on the other side and it is the same, with about 11mm of thread protruding by the time the spring washer and nut go on it’s not enough for the nut to have threads protruding.

I am fitting the original spring washer and nut. My question is, am I missing something obvious? Should the thread protrude more or is it possible the replacement subframe has thicker metal so not as many visible threads? Should I fit a thinner nut and washer to allow for the less thread?

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Pin wrong way around?

I don’t think so, I have refitted it the same way with the grease nipple the other end?

Pins the correct way around as the grease nipple is on the other side. Is it the correct washer as they are different sizes from memory but sure if they are different thicknesses.

I’m using the same thrust washers as before but that doesn’t mean they are right? A thinner washer would help, but I would still probably be a fair bit off.

If I had the old subframe I would measure the thickness of the metal, but I sold it ‍♂

Just measured my old subframe for you, believed original from 1987.

Thickness is approx 6.95mm where the pin goes through.

Thank you Rusty, I will measure mine in a bit and see how thick it is. Cheers.

The 2 thrust washers are different.
Outer washer is thinner 3.8mm thick
Inner washer is thicker 7.4mm thick and larger diameter than the OUTER one.
The pin has a longer thread at the inner end. Also has threaded hole for grease nipple at outer end.
Check thrust washers are correct and correct position.

The inner is the larger diameter type 36.4mm and thicker (7.4mm) - part no ACA9302
The outer washer is smaller diameter 33.1mm and thinner (3.8mm) - part no 2A7324

Same thrust washers and set up as the front suspension top arms.

Just measured mine and oddly when I dipped the hole it’s about 10.5mm, which would account for a lot of the missing thread. Question now is, shall I find a thinner nut and spring washer?

That would be slightly moving away from standard, but all the other holes line up for radius arm bracket and the thrust washer is as per the book (thinner washer).

Hmmm - can you edit that so it’s clearer?

the inner washer is a larger diameter than the inner one?

Where the pin is fitted, the Subframe is laminated with (if memory serves) 3 layers. These may have spread a little. I don't know if in your top photo you've done the nut up, if you haven't, try that as that maybe the issue.

The Stub on the inboard end should be 1.050" from the Pin Shoulder. It might also be worth measuring.

I did tighten the nut on the top picture. Like you say it may pull in a bit when fully torqued. I’m just wandering why I measured the thickness of the subframe hole to be 10.5mm whereas Rusty measured his old subframe at just under 7mm?

Just a thought - have you already tightened the outer nut - if you loosen the outer nut does it allow the pin to move inwards and give you more thread at the inside ?
