Took my 998 with JCG twin carb, stage 3 head, highlift rockers, maniflow exhaust etc to local mini friendly rolling road and am a little dissapointed that despite finding an extra 3-4 horses it was still somewhat. short of the  claimed 64 bhp.

Compression was ok, so they were at a loss as to why the  power wasnt great.

It was suggested that I try upgrading my ignition to an  electronic system and doing away with the points based one- anyone got any suggestions as  what to try, and do i need to upgrade coil as well. ?

thanks

Around 60 bhp sounds about right in my opinion. I would get a Kent 266 cam and megajolt ignition system running a ford coil pack. You can buy mini specific kits. Apart from that start looking at forced induction, and a full engine rebuild. :shades:  :highfive:

Electronic ignition won't give you any more horsepower

What carbs are they? Could be overkill for a 998 leading to dropped stack velocity.

If its over carbd it won't have enough charge velocity.

Depending on mileage the motor may be worn, get a leak down test and full compression test carried out anything under 120psi is needing attention and is costing you power.

Remember that low horsepower generally means good torque.

I agree that a swap to electronic dizzy is not worth it. What rolling road did you use?

I would be happy with that power is similar to mine- i have more torque than bhp
998 20thou over bore
202 head
Ac dodd profile needles on hs2 twins with vizard work
Modified 64D dizzy by ac
Full maniflow system
I think thats all the mods....

How much power/torque did it make ?

Phil.

60 bhp is about right for that spec.
The 998 Cooper with a 12g295 head, twin HS2's, freeflow exhaust and a better cam only gave 55 bhp.

Rolling roads lie

...nearly as much as JC Garages. Never seen anything like the HP they claimed for their conversions.

I think a lot of people have misread your original post as they seem to think you made 60hp.
I’d have hoped for a little more, though I think the claimed JC 64hp is a little optimistic and rolling roads can vary quite considerably.
How does it drive ?

Phil.

seems to drive ok, and i suppose for lots of ntown driving and winding roads round these parts its fine...., but i'd never say no to a little more oomph- closer to 60 bhp would have been nice !.   Its sounds really nice though.  :D
