Very delayed reply i do apologize,

So after doing a lot of cleaning up in the engine bay and still tons more to do, finally got around to compression testing.

Cylinders 4 160 psi

                3 50 psi

                2 40 psi

                1 165 psi

looking like Something internal and hoping nothing to bad has happen, going to start dismantling it some more will keep you all posted.

Well you either have a failed head gasket or leaking valves on 3 and 2.

I agree, failed head gasket or valves needing reground in the head. Also make sure the head is levelled

Checking the flatness of the head is often mentioned but as important is the flatness of the block.Of course this is more challenging to rectify.there looks to be significant scorch marks on your photo.Steve..

Time for a rebuild looking at all of that.

Now if you are happy to stay at 998, then a proper check of the bores, piston wear, crank wear etc will dictate where you go with this.

Even if you decide to go down the 1275 route, unless you buy an engine fresh from a machine shop or from Minispares, Minisport etc you will need to strip it down for a inspection.

Will strip it as far back as I can and keep posting regular updates with pictures, as far as type of engine upgrade to go for or keeping original like you have mentioned, just got to see what I find along the way.

In the middle of tidying up and making space in the garage for wants to come.

You need to get the engine out and take it off of the gearbox. Then a full strip down will show you what you have. With bores and pistons looking like that, one might wonder what the main and big-end shells are like and how worn the timing chain is.

The block deck will almost certainly need a light skim, but don't do that until the engine has been re-bored and a trial build carried out. Then you can measure how much needs to come off the block to bring the pistons level with the deck at TDC.

Yeah I plan on doing so but don't have enough room for an engine hoist, might have to buy something to attach to the garage roof like a pulley system of sorts.

This is going to get interesting for me...

Hate to get all Elf 'n' Safety on you but, please, make sure the roof structure can take the weight?

Otherwise it may get really interesting for you.

Cheers for the concern will be double and triple checking anything structural before I go hanging an engine off it.

No real progress ATM just searching the interwebs for engineering places local to me. Found one next to M&M's mini spares called Headsshop and another in St Helens R.N.A engines.

Or if anyone knows anyone who can help would be appreciated

Jeez, the cylinder head weights enough.

Some more chipping away

Had to compress this picture down a lot to post it so apologies if it's grainy
