Hi,
Can anyone tell me if my ‘64 850 is likely to have reverse thread on the near side rear hub nut ? I just can’t get the darned thing off. It looks new, well greased, not rusty etc. Your advice will be much appreciated. By the way, the offside nut came undone easily 😳

The rear n/s hub nut has a left hand thread so what would usually tighten it up loosens it.

Thanks but still can’t undo it, despite extension bar on socket etc. And yes, I took the split pin out first 😉

All Minis have a Left hand thread on the rear arm on the left side of the car. UK near side.

BUT if some one at some time changed the stub axel it is possible the incorrect on was fitted.

you should be able to see enough thread to see though.

Thanks. I can just see some thread but working it out did my head in; I’m 52 you know 😅
I guess heat mustn’t be applied due to bearings behind, so now I’m stuck…

I did, several times and even lifted the car off the axle stand whilst trying with fully extended 20” socket bar..

Can the castellated nut be drilled or split somehow ?

Being where it is, you would be able to get a Nut Spliter in there. They normally remove the nut clean, but you will need a new nut.

Most Nut Splitters are flat, but there's some brands / types that have a small angle / kick on the cutting head. That would be the style you'd want.

Another way would be to drill a flat of the nut, putting say 3 or 4 small - around 3 mm - holes in a line down a flat, but don't drill right though - stop short. Then split it with a cold chisel. Be sure to thoroughly clean the bearing assembly once it's removed.

Soak it overnight with some penetrating fluid get an extension on your 20" bar have the bar level with the floor sticking out beyond the boot and heave on it towards the floor, it won't lift off the stand and should undo. If no joy drill and chisel it off.

Heat it. If the bearings have a plastic seal, seal can be removed or replaced.

Also, an impact gun is usually successful as the vibes break friction lock from rust.
