Well folks, I used my Dremel & a mini diamond disc cutter to remove the inner bearing sleeve. Then fitted a new taper bearing set & new castellated nut. All good now & thanks for all your helpful advice. Iain

How long did it take to dremel? I was advised to not attempt with dremel and use an angle grinder instead.

I think you could use either, the mail thing here is not to damage the stub axle, otherwise it goes from being a few hour job to an all day ordeal and cost a fair bit more. I wouldn't class my Angle Grinder skills as good, so, while a bit expensive to burn through a few Dremel Cutting Discs, I think if I was to use grinding as a method here, I'd be inclined to use a Dremel and take my time doing it. To be honest, I'm probably more of a Cave Man so I've done these by drilling a couple of small holes in the nut then using a Cold Chisel that I can bash with my Club, though now days, I have a Nut Splitter.

Dremel with discs at about a £1 each was excellent and very controllable. No damage to stub axle or hub/backplate. Obviously wore goggles but no dramas, just a few sparks.
