Is the distributor phased correctly.If fitted incorrectly the rotor can miss the cap segment as the ignition advances.Might be worth checking.I have had this happen but it was on a V8 engine.Steve..

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, I need to check the distributor, but unsure of "Phase"

Is the rotor pointing directly at the number one contact when at top dead center.Steve..

Yes, at TDC on firing stroke

It wouldn't even idle if it wasn't somewhere close to firing the right cylinder at the right time.

Yes it would,the rotor is on the edge of the contact and it idles.As rpm increases it advances and moves away causing too large a gap and misfiring.Some rotor arms had larger wedge shaped contacts to avoid this.Granted four cylinder caps are probably too far apart to fire the next cylinder.Free to check so I would not overlook it.Steve..

Not seeing how that would be possible, the lobes for opening the points & the slot to locate the rotor arm are the same bit of metal.
