Go for Protech (call them direct) softer than Gaz and more selections.... Plus great warranty

Oooooh those Protech ones look so pretty.

Think it might just come down to how much i want to spend.  These and the Gaz ones are a bit more budget friendly bearing in mind i've just spent £500 getting it through an MOT (bloody emissions!).

Hey friends

I'm looking to replace the shocks on my mini as it seems the original Koni red ones, the rubber mountings have deteriorated. One on the front and one on the back and making a horrible rattle.

I thought the rubbers could just be replaced, but they seem to be in built and i guess the whole thing needs replacing.

So my question is, should i just replace like for like, or would it be worth using another brand/type.

Minisport seem to have a bigger selection than Minispares.

So is it worth going for Gaz or maybe the Spax Krypton?

If anyone has any experience of setting up or using different ones, that would be great.

Cheers

Dan

If you want nice shiny new shock absorbers - that's fine, but the rubbers are available.

They are usually a press fit. I think these are the ones?

You can replace the rubbers, they're an OEM part. I'll see if i can dig out the part number

The original Koni red shocks were factory fitted to the MPi Minis because of the heavier 6x13" Sportpack wheels.

Interesting, i did try to get the old bushes out of the front, but the metal tube wouldnt come out, it felt like it had barbs on it to keep it in place. Maybe i dont have the tools to be able to press it out? The bush kit on ebay just doesnt look right with the raised rubber edge, or are mine deteriorated so badly the edge is gone?

Mine are no longer red due to a number of resprays where they werent covered up correctly. I do like the idea of shiny new ones.  ;D

Would that mean others might not be suitable for the sportspack wheels?

Koni dampers work on a slightly different principle than other dampers. They are softer on 'bump' than on 'rebound'.

Personally I like SPAX and GAZ. They are both easy to adjust and work well on any size of wheel or tyre as the optimum setting is easy to obtain. The price is about right as well.

Standard mini shocks from Minispares are softer on bump, as are gaz shocks.
