So had gearbox rebuilt, jacked one wheel off ground to try gearbox and clutch are working ok, when in reverse the wheels drive forward! Any ideas on why? Thanks

Explain. What you say is not actually possible in any way.

Either in 4th gear or you don’t understand the principle of an open diff.

Your quite correct I don’t understand the principle, car now on the ground, when lifting the gear stick and backwards towards my knee the car still goes forward, and it doesn’t feel like 4th but it could be, got a mechanic coming int morning so he will advise.

in theory though just lifting the stick and moving it the right way doesn't necessarily dictate that you're in reverse

lifting the stick just means you can clear a little ridge in the gear selector box it's not directly related to the gearbox itself

could just be something is loose or otherwise not allowing the gear selector to move far enough

the point about the standard open diff (not limited slip) is that you turn one wheel and the other turns in the opposite direction

Thats exactly what should happen with one wheel jacked up. Jack up both and they will turn in the right direction.

is that true? if that was the case, if one wheel was stuck in mud for example, it would spin backwards, and that's not the case surely

besides it sounds more like the problem is just not getting into reverse properly, probably simplest first thing to try is winding the reversing light switch out a bit to allow a little more movement?

..car now on the ground, when lifting the gear stick and backwards towards my knee the car still goes forward..

Only a guess here but I think the Shifting Shaft in the Gear Shifter itself has rotated 1800 from how it should be orientated.

If you remove the Gearstick and look in the Shifter Housing, the Hole in the Eye should be lower the the Shaft.

If you find it's higher than the Shaft, then pop the Roll Pin back out of the Coupling (at the back of the gearbox), rotate the Shaft 1800, and refit the Roll Pin. I've made the rotating of the Shaft sound easy here, you may in fact also need to remove the Reverse Light Switch and jiggle the Shaft about a bit to allow it to rotate.

Sorry my mistake, was thinking with both wheels up in the air and car in gear , turning one wheel makes the other go backwards.

Yes and with one wheel on the ground the one in the air will turn at twice the speed in normal direction when powered from the gearbox.

I was once on the last stage of a "Motoring News" somewhere on O/S 147, when the CV 'popped' on full lock.

I was able to force the handle of the ratchet from the socket set, through the diff coupling, and although it ruined the stub axle, I finished on one wheel drive.
