Sadiq Khan accused of 'manipulating' consultation to expand £12.50 zone as complaint lodged against Mayor.
“Sadiq Khan and his mayoral team have been accused of making ‘false and dishonest’ statements to the London Assembly and 'manipulating' a consultation to expand the £12.50 ultra low emission charge zone (ULEZ).The Mayor of London last month decided to forge ahead with expanding ULEZ across all of Greater London despite a majority of respondents to a public consultation opposing the plans. Under the plans, a £12.50 daily charge will be imposed on any vehicle entering the outer limits of the capital if it does not comply with emissions criteria.”

I'm not surprised, many of the boroughs south of the river have very poor transport links. Having grown up in that sort of area, it's the worst of both worlds - close enough to London to get caught up in this kind of stuff (as well as the typical terrible traffic, high house prices etc..) but not close enough to feel the everyday benefits.

Yes, if you happen to be close to a station you can get into the city without much fuss (I was a 10min walk and 15min train ride away from Victoria, very commutable) but getting across to see your friends or do some shopping still needed a car as there was only one bus service to the local town centre (in the opposite direction from the nearest supermarket).

To put it another way, we moved my mother out of London to a small West Country town because it was more liveable (walkable) for someone that doesn't drive and has limited mobility.

Latest statement from Croydon Mayor Perry on ULEZ expansion.

"Croydon Council strongly opposes Sadiq Khan’s plan to expand the Ultra-Low Emission Zone. Khan’s plan will not only force hundreds of Croydon residents to pay £12.50 a day just to drive their car, but his own studies show it will have very little environmental impact. “Alongside other outer London authorities, Croydon is exploring options to legally challenge this flawed expansion. We will also be resisting attempts by TfL to use our lampposts and street furniture for ULEZ signage and cameras."

The expansion seemingly will have very little impact on the air quality and density of traffic.. why do it? Cash grab?

The little known loophole that lets you beat the ULEZ charge: How drivers of older cars need not necessarily worry about Sadiq Khan's £12.50-a-day tax....
"Once cars reach 40 years old - so those before January 1983 - they are also Ulez exempt. So this also can provide a relatively low-cost option to remain within the rules while driving around in a head turner, such as an MGB GT, an original Mini Cooper S, or a host of classic Fords used during the filming of the ITV show The Sweeney or The Professionals.
Those seeking something with a bit more class, maybe a Jaguar MkII as featured in Inspector Morse would be more appropriate.
Although, for those who have to ditch their economical diesel car to avoid the charge, but are unwilling to pay for a new car, there is another option... buying a luxury motor before they become an unaffordable classic.
One 2006 Range Rover Vogue - featuring the throbbing 395bhp 4.2litre supercharged V8 - is currently available for £3,780.
When new, the first owner would have paid more than £80,000 for the car. But be warned, that while the luxury SUV is available for the same money as a supermarket runaround, its parts and servicing costs remain at a premium.
Also, for someone used to 50-60mpg in a non-compliant diesel car, the 12.6mpg around town might provoke palpitations."

Hi All,

I went onto one site for checking ULEZ compliance and was told that the 05 Megan CC I was checking did not meet the standard as it had a Euro category 3 engine but was told to check with the TLF official site. I did and was informed that the car was in fact compliant with their emission standards. Like above I have printed off the confirmation notice in case there is any dispute in the future when the ULEZ is extended to within 4 miles of me and Bushy Park is covered by it.

It's a real 'bugers muddle'.

My 1964 Cooper 'S' is compliant as it is 'Historic'. My 1990 Cooper is not.

My 2010 BMW 3-Series petrol is compliant. My wife's 2015 Fiesta Diesel is not, although it is deemed to be so 'clean that the road tax is free.

My Grandson's BMW 630 is compliant, but his 1996 Mini Mayfair 998 is not compliant.

The whole thing is a blooming disgrace and a 'money grubbing' exercise.

Sorry I re-read this but still don't understand how the 4.2L Range Rover meets the ULEZ standard? What is used to define compliance other than historic which I understand. Just curious only as I might go to the Ace Cafe meet one time this year although if I understand correctly it is not in the ULEZ as it is on the outside of the North Circular Road.

The rules state that the A406 (NCR) itself is not in the ULEZ so you can drive on it to get to the Ace Cafe but in theory if you are travelling west-bound/anti-clockwise (as we would from the M1) and have to go off to the left/inside at the Ace Cafe junction, strictly in theory you have gone inside the NCR and into the ULEZ? Hopefully the slip road is classed as part of the A406 still.....!

Ah and I didn't realise it will expand in August this year to cover almost all of the area inside the M25 so that will probably seriously curtail or end the Ace Cafe nights (except for historics or people willing to pay 12.50 to go.......)

Just used the TfL site to check my three minis and for some reason the kit car (Historic taxation class) still shows as need to pay?

Also checked the dailies we have - 15 reg Audi 2.0 diesel OK, 09 BMW 3.0 petrol not OK, Daughter's 57 plate corsa 1.4 petrol is OK though!!!!!

Who can explain the inconsistency?

My 998cc mini (when finished) will not be ULEZ free, until 2028 anyway

My 2.4ltr Volvo estate that gets a smidge over 20mpg urban (up to about 26 on the long runs) is ULEZ free (which was a massive part of the purchasing decision)

then again the Volvo has a Cat and 'efficient' fuel injection whereas the mini is on carbs and the exhaust is just a hollow metal tube

emissions and fuel usage aren't necessarily directly correlated are they

The London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Harrow and Hillingdon and Surrey County Council have brought legal action following TfL’s announcement in November 2022 that it would push on with proposals to expand the scheme in August 2023 despite strong opposition from across outer London and beyond including concerns over how it is being delivered.
A coalition of five councils has today (Thursday 16 February) launched a Judicial Review to challenge Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor of London’s decision to expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to outer London boroughs.
Tim Oliver, Leader of Surrey County Council said: “We are committed to delivering a greener future, but it must be done in a practical and sustainable way. We are dismayed at the lack of discussion or consideration given to these proposals by the Mayor of London. The impact on many Surrey residents and businesses will be significant and we will not stand by and watch that happen with no mitigations offered from the Mayor”
