See now I’m really confused, I’ll have to try and find that article. I’d go with the M’s but just afraid about cold performance and as I use the mini as regular driver, the brakes have to work off the bat too. Hmmm, what to do?

https://www.calverst...technical-info/

Thanks, great info!

Another all in one link rating each pad from the Calver site via minispares site:

http://www.minispare...pes-and-choices

After reading through the info on Calver site, I actually think the EBC Black Ultimax may the right match. They have to better than the cheap generic ones I have at the moment.

”…EBC Kevlar pads (black Ultimax I believe)…ideal for durable, high-quality brake pads providing vast improvements over the more common high metallic non-asbestos types. Pros - Very low disc damage/wear, no ‘noise’, very high friction/anti-fade braking, extremely wide effective temperature range keeps production costs down so are cheaper than equivalent pads, enhanced pad life, extensive range. Cons - Erm.”

I have EBC black pads fitted, mainly because that's what came when I bought my 7.5" disc kit from Minispares.  I had them on for 100 miles or so but then experienced some shocking fade when testing the brakes hard from high speed, it took ages for the brakes to work properly after that.  I intended on replacing them with Mintex pads but never did and since that rather alarming experience they have never let me down again.  Not sure if that somehow bedded them in but I get no fade from them now and they work reliably every time from cold.  If you get them just be careful to bed them in properly.

I always use Mintex 1144 for normal road use. For competition use with 7.5" discs I use the Pagid Carbon-Metallic pads as sold by Mini Spares and with 8.4" discs for competition I use Mintex 1166 or 1177.

The 1144's are great at all brake temperatures on normal road use and maybe for mild competition, although I did fade a set whilst out testing before the \C-M ones were fitted.

Personally I don't like the EBC 'Stuff'.

It's generally accepted that EBC brake pads are crap and not just for the Mini.

Also bear in mind that pad shapes can be altered by some brake parts suppliers to make them fit different calipers.

Thanks for all your feedback folks, just one last question, if I’m going to all this trouble (I do need to replace the brake lines), should I be going for a set of 4 pot calipers for my 7.5” discs? Assuming they will fit under the 4.5” Cooper S steel/alloy wheels (I believe the KAD ones don’t).

Again, think about what type of driving that you do on a daily basis.  Autocross, track days, driving like your hair's on fire??  Then 4 pot may be what you need, otherwise drums in the rear and standard calipers up front with a decent set of pads will do fine.

used to run green stuff ok on grooved discs but on plain ones uased to glaze up and needed claning with sandpaper at end of year. 4 pots ok on 7.5 but why not go for 7.9 just beware of wheel weights. fitted these to other halfs car and better than my 7.5 with only slightly more pedal travel. on both of these standard good quality pads fine, even for spirited driving

You really don't need 4-pot calipers on 7.5" discs. The original Cooper 'S' did and does fine in really agressive competiton with solid discs. It used to be the norm to fit the old Ferodo DS11 pads which had nasty asbestos, but the modern Carbon-Metallic ones are absolutely superb at all temperatures. Even on International Historic rallies I have never faded out the brakes on my 1964 'S' even when the discs have literally been glowing red hot. It is, however, then necessary to use a competition brake fluid like AP600 or equivalent to avoid fluid boiling.

For road use the Mintex 1144 with normal 2-pot calipers and solid discs will be completely adequate. Even if you drive flat out on twisty roads they will be fine.

Do not under any circumstances fit EBC 'stuff' pads of any description.

I have the EBC 'stock' pads (as supplied by minispares in the drum to 7.5 inch disc kit) on my Clubman Estate (cruiser, in no way a fast road car) and I find that they stop the car okay but in some situations I feel that I could have stopped the car quicker with better pads.

I have experience of Mintex 1144 pads in a friends short oval racer, we never have issues even after 35 laps and the discs glowing red.

For 7.5" 'S' discs and 'S' calipers, these are the very, very best pads. They are simply superb for normal to full-on rally applications:

Are those similar to the Carbon Lorraine pads?

Thanks Cooperman, Do the pads squeal at all when cold or in general use?

Great stuff, thank you.  Do you run them with plain or grooved brake discs?
