I just use the best quality 7.5" solid un-grooved discs.
A lot of after-market parts manufacturers have tried, and in some cases succeeded, in persuading owners that up-rated brakes are really necessary for fast modified Minis. It simply isn't true and one only has to look at the results of FIA Group 2 Minis in competition and the fantastic results obtained with standard brakes simply uprated with much better pads and brake fluid to see the logic of this.
The big issue has always been brake pad material and in the 1960's the Ferodo was the pad of choice. It was an Asbestos-Copper pad and worked well only when quite hot to very hot. Of course, they are no longer available, but the Carbon-Metallic ones now available are both better and longer lasting. For really agressive use a competition brake fluid is required since with thse pads, as with the old DS11, the fluid will boil before the pads fade.
For motorsport, the other big advntage of using standard brake discs and calipers is that in an emergency any Cooper 'S' wheel will fit without it hitting the caliper. I have sometimes lent other competitors a wheel when they have had more than a couple of punctures and they always fit. I even gave a set of brake pads to another Mini competitor when his EBC brake pads completely faded on the first special stage of a historic rally.
In normal road use, the brakes usually run too cold and so bigger and/or vented and/or multi-pot brakes are simply over-kill.
P.S. This is the brake fluid I use in my rally cars it is DOT4 compatible, but it's advisable to flush all the old standard DOT4 out and fill with this good stuff. I get mine from Demon Tweeks.
