Morning all,

We took our 72' clubman out for a Sunday driver yesterday and it developed an unpleasant vibration sound in the engine, this occurs when idling, and when driving through all gears, but not when the clutch is depressed. people with infinitely more knowledge than me have suggested it sounds like a bearing in/around the gearbox, most likely the input shaft bearing.

I guess my questions are as follows:

1- As a non mechanically minded person, is this something that can be done DIY with the aid of a Haynes Manual or like I suspect will I be employing the talents of a local mechanic?

2- What kind of financial pain am I looking at to rectify this, hundreds or thousands?

3- Are there any works worth undertaking at the same time assuming the engine will need to come out?

4- Can anyone recommend a Mechanic is the South Somerset (Ilminster) area?

5- Is it safe to drive to said mechanic or should I be looking at getting it trailered?

thanks in advance for any help/advice/recommendations

Hi and welcome to the forum, sorry to hear of your problems here.

I think we need some more info here to help narrow down what the issue might be.

Are you able to take a video of it with decent sound ?

You could also take it to a couple of garages and ask for their opinion, just be sure they are familiar with Minis.

It would be worth checking the inner drivershaft joints, not sure what they would have been on a car of that age (rubber spider or pot join type) but it might be a failure at this point.

I would suggest anything in the gearbox would more likely cause noise than vibration.

As an aside I had an inner pot joint failure on a 2000 Ford Mondeo and the vibration was horrific when driving along but that too stopped when the clutch was depressed.  It turned out the joint had broken inside and one of the balls had come out and was floating around in the joint.

As Moke Spider says, a video might help diagnose.
