Im in the middle of redoing my mini and i was considering a rear disc conversion. What are your thoughts on this? has it been done? what can i use apart from purchasing a £600 conversion kit lol
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

KAD do a kit so yes its been done.
Also ive heard about ford scorcipo or granada rear calipers been used.
I think the general problem is the handbrake, but once you have that sorted, theres no stopping you.
Generally it is seen as unnessecary, so it depends what you hope to acheive and what engine etc u running.

As stated, this is a fairly useless modification, even KAD will tell you that it's more for weight saving than performance.
Even mini miglias use drums on back.

it would be very cool, and I don't want to put you off, but, it is largely, as said, a worthless modification in terms of increasing breaking power, and also, not easy to jusitfy the expense for purely cosmetic reasons.
Get some minifins, they look good and will improve braking efficiency! all for about £150 i think, can't remember price exactly.

it really would be a pain in the proverbial to try to make your own,
although there is evidentaly a loophole to make it easier!
if your car is registered pre 68 the handbrake isn't part of the MOT test so you don't need one.
I personaly have a KAD setup on the back of my project, and although it's damn light you can probably get most of the way there with minifins, and ally hubs for less than half the price.

i bet they look the part though
Ok, seems pointless then from what you lot say so ill only do it if i come into a whole loada cash. and i dont play the lottery so i suppose its off the cards all together lol

To be honest, unless your into some serious racing, I would think your a bit of an idiot to spend £600 on some brakes that offer not a lot apart from a bit of a weight saving, which, as mini13 says, you can mostly achieve with alloy hubs, alloy radius arms and some minifins!

decided to bring this up again
i want to do it. i dont want to spend hundreds on a KAD kit either
i've got some brand new shiney minifins and complete brake setups from one of the shops but i keep them to one side till i see if i can work it out.
at a guess i dont see why another set of mini callipers wont work? if they use em on the front surely it cant be a size issue? im guessing its how to mount the disc onto the radius arm thats the prob?

i think the handbrake is a problem?
I saw a vauxhall the other day, monza i think, it has drums with a disc on the back. Drums for the handbrake and discs for foot brake.

so basically all id need is that plate to mount em?
then work out handbrake?
then work out handbrake?

A mini does not really need rear discs and calipers due to the fact the car weighs about the same as a crisp packet compared to most cars. You would be better off getting better front calipers and discs.

its not about needing its a style issue. if its something i 'need' id stick to a standard 998 with drums all round.
