there was one in the mini mags a while ago that had a volvo rear disc setup. the handbrake was built into the caliper but was still cable operated.

you will need to modify the hubs to get a disc on there too.

ill be interested to see how you get on

Not on a road car it isn't. The handbrake must be mechanically seperate from the service brake, not necessarily cable operated but definitely entirely mechanically seperate.

Ususally on road cars there is either a drum-in-disc setup as you describe (I can think of Vauxhalls and Mitsubishis that use that system) or a cable operated caliper either built into the main caliper or seperate. There may be some with a seperate hydraulic system but it cannot be linked into the main service brake.

We all know the pros and cons, and I'm all for helping someone have a go at this.
In theory it is quite possible to do it cheap if you can engineer the bits. Find some granada scorpio calipers (they have the additional cable handbrake mechanism)- or something similar. You should use the mini's front hub plate (to retain mini wheels at the rear) with an empty cv cup. Getting that mated to a trailing arm - F*ck knows? oh ********, just buy the KAD kit or stick some minifins on! LOL

I reckon if you are gonna do it, go for a setup from a normal road car (say an old Pug 1.9 GTi). You can get a complete setup (a whole rear beam) for IRO £100. You'd need some machining work too, but I reckon it's do-able.

Not hard to do I would imagine. New machined hubs I think. Callipers from a ford puma or various mazda's in alloy with hand brake. Then just fab some brackets. The mazda ones are the smallest and lightest ones I have seen.

Mk1 MR2? Has rear discs and mech handbrake? I'm sure an MGF will have a similar setup, and would a MGF might be a good car to look at due to it being K series and so could share similarities with a Metro?!
