I stopped going to MG shows when the owner of a cheque book restoration,he admitted that all he had done was pay for it,said whilst pointing at mine"it's not very good is it?".I do not know but I suspect that mini shows are similar.
Also there is a new breed that seem to delight in proclaiming"not legal!,ringer!etc"
This is just my experience, yours may differ.Steve..
Steve I stopped taking my MG to shows as I got cheesed off by people criticising the bodywork in front of me as if I wasn't there. I have totally rebuilt the car underneath including an engine rebuild and it is completely safe and reliable, just tatty on top. Look underneath some 'beautifully restored' MGs and the important stuff hasn't been touched for 40 years. Some people haven't got a clue.

and the shirt collars you can go hang gliding with
another highlight from post #10 tubular grille made from wardrobe railings :) yes mate now that's ingenuity
I had an old volvo years ago I cut out the plastic grille and replaced with chicken mesh, it was always the first thing people commented on how good it looked.. how much was that maybe £2.50

Having seen some tatty cars, we all know how much work it takes to build a decent daily mini. The phrase 'built not bought' means so much to me, as I do as much of the work I can, my dad does the welding and paint spraying, we only outsource carburettor optimisation!

All my cars are built from scrap cars that otherwise people wouldn’t bother with but people don’t usually know that and just assume that I’ve taken a mint rare example and wrecked it to annoy the rivet counters.
I’m not alone in not taking minis to mini shows due to the vandalism.. there’s a big group of us who meet up at international shows.
I’ve got thick skin and don’t care what people think of me but I do care when someone keys a mini because they don’t like what you’ve done.
I was once threatened with a punch in the face form another show entrants husband for painting a cabrio a non standard Colour ( the husband denied this in front of his wife when asked about what his wife had told me).. it was a 94 cabrio that was completely wrecked and rotten to the core before I did what I could to save it.
I’m sure the wife who is well known posts on here and can vouch for this as true
This car was also kicked and had the wing and front panel corner pushed in whilst at mini in the park.. all because it wasn’t red or blue lol
There’s many a story of vandalism at minis shows and lots and lots for the newer bmw minis. I’ve never taken a bmw mini to a mini run etc but I’ve known many people to have cars scratched and cigarettes flicked through windows and onto seats. Crazy!
I’ve got the pictures of the vandalism on my old laptop.. I’ll try and get this booted up and post the,
As many of you will know an old windows computer is fun to boot up so this will probably be in 2039 at some point

haha rivet counters that's such a perfect way of describing them, I can almost hear the adenoidal voice as well "well, actually i think you'll find..." eugh go away
damaging someone elses car for any reason even if it isn't totally pathetic like just the colour is the lowest of the low scummiest thing to do, there needs to be stocks and rotten veg at events for when this happens
so basically then the variety we used to see has been completely ruined by boring people who want to see the same mini over and over again all day. wow thanks. maybe there needs to be a new show for modified only

just to clarify though of course not everyone with a 'standard' mini is boring, no-ones saying that obviously
all thumbs are fingers, not all fingers are thumbs as they say

Any scene can get staid and boring but these things go through phases.
Back in the heady heady days of jacked up Cortinas, Anglias, Escorts with velour interiors and Jag rear ends to now more reserved exteriors but bonkers under pinnings etc.
Yes there are only so many shows you can go to with the same cars going etc but like a lot us know things take time to build , modify etc so if we stop going we wont see these slow builders come through.
Mine is taking forever, it will look pretty stock on the outside but lift the bonnet and there will be my SC Seven port built by Oz. The rest of the car will have been my build as shown in my signature and i will be proud to show it. I will be royally pissed if someone tries to scratch, mess with it and god help them if i catch them doing it. The green eyed monster attitude of some people beggars belief and this is why some folk refuse to bring their builds to shows. Now that is a crying shame but i get it.
So standard or modified, sleeper or Ratted bring them on, each to their own and if if people havent got a good thing to say then say nothing and walk on past. A bit like FB!!!

That's the exact reason I no longer compete in concourse. I loved the opportunity to compete against some amazing minis, but sadly I heard one of the competitors say under their breath "well, that's not going to win" to someone who i found out was judging the competition, utterly ruin it for me. From discussing with other owners that have wanted to enter, they don't want to "compete with the clique".
