Hi folk.

This bloody engine Ive bought, starting to regret it.

Put it in, filled with oil, plugs out, cranking over, no oil pressure.

Ive taken the oil pipe banjo out and filled with oil whilst pushing backwards in 4th gear. No pressure.

Oil filter has oil it it.

Relief valve appears to move smoothly.

Possibly gauge is dodgy but it did work in my old engine, the switch off my old engine was always dodgy so cant rely on that. So ordered a pressure testing kit, hopefully due today.

Thought Id take the pressure switch out and see if oil comes out when cranking. Nothing.

Advice please..

When you poured oil into the banjo bolt hole and pushed the car backwards in gear, did the oil disappear? it needs more than just a dribble of oil to get back to the pump.  If you crank it over does oil appear if you take the banjo bolt out again?

Who did you buy the engine off? New or used?

guage mech or electric? Did you change anything between gauge and engine?

Yes oil disappeared. Should I keep filling until it stops disappearing?

Used engine. Will withhold the seller name for now in case I need to return.

Gauge is mechanical, wondered whether Id kinked the brass pipe hence ordering a oil pressure kit.

With the appropriate amount of oil in - I would expect it to pump oil out of the oil switch hole when cranking?

Oil pressure kit arrived. Not evening reading. Guess that would have been obvious what with no oil coming out of the sender unit hole.

It can take a good few goes pushing the car backwards backfilling the oil pump. Fresh charged battery, plugs out when cranking?

Have you got the warning lamp still connected? My gauge works well but not when only cranking. It’s takes the engine to fire and then it will jump up.

I had the same worry that no oil was moving, but connecting the original warning lamp showed that pressure was building enough to fire the engine….at which point the gauge showed good pressure.

I'd get at least 150cc/1/4 pint down it to be absolutely sure the pump was full and oil was getting past it to the pickup tube in the block.

Yes plugs out, full battery. Pushed it back and forward maybe 3x. Needs more?

The warning light is and has always been faulty that I took off my old engine (or at least believe it is) hence not relying on it, cranking it without the plugs in the light did go off. Put the plugs in, fired up for less than 2 seconds and the light came on. Will order a new switch and see if anything changes.

Would needing to put more oil in and push it back more explain why no oil came out of the pressure switch hole when cranking?

Yes, the pressure switch hole is a drilling into the main oil gallery, which is fed from the oil filter.  So if the pump isn't primed the oil won't flow into the filter and out again into the engine.

I'd say with the priming and cranking you've done, the Oil Pump is probably quite worn. If it was being driven often, you probably wouldn't know, but that it's been sat around now for a while it's drained back and the clearances within it due to the likely wear it's just too much to get it to draw the oil up.

Take the Banjo Bolt up and fill that right up. Let it sit overnight. If there's still a lot of oil there, then the Pump is OK, if the Oil's gone, either the Relief Valve is just not seating properly (and yes, noted that you've checked it) or the Pump is worn as I'm guessing here.
