Has anyone installed an 8-port on an MPi block in an MPi car?

I imagine the radiator would get in the way or at least the top hose...

You have bigger things to think about than that. But it can be done. It all depends on how you do the other bits. And what your local regs say about the stuff that comes out of the exhaust.

I am in the US of A. Most of our cars are early, so emissions are not an issue.

Even the alternator and coil would be in the way

For sure, it is doable and it will not be a bolt-on modification. If I was about to do such an installation I would be prepared to do a lot of fabrication myself, that including repositioning of things.

Emission regulations should not be a problem either. No matter what, I would recommend to go for port injection in separate runners connected to a intake plenum with one throttle body, wasted spark or coil on spark, lambda sensor and an stand-alone ECU. Adding a 3-way catalytic converter and a proper set up, I can not see that you should end up with any emission issues.

Its been done. You have to relocate the alternator with custom brackets. You'll have to go stand alone ecu, which is think is pretty obvious.

It it just my imagination running away with me...

What I would do if I won the lottery over here in the states.

I have followed your progress, Steve220 and admire what you are doing. I got a MED catalog at a Mini Meet here in the US and went to the website and was taken with the 8 port, but it appears they are out of stock.

Just wondering what I would do if I had the resources

I've always wanted an 8 port on Amals. But not only is there the cost of the head, carbs/injection and exhaust manifold, it also needs a different cam as the valve order is different to a 5 port and different length push rods. This then means one of the cam lobes hits a conrod on a 1275 non S engine and requires the use of Cooper S or KAD/MED/Swiftune, etc. conrods and suitable crankshaft with smaller diameter big ends.
The costs start to spiral out of control!

How about a 7 port? It obviously hasn't got the wow factor of the 8, but it's a viable alternative IMO.

I have got the impression that the 7-port has a bad reputation, but is it really valid? The AKM, later Minisport, head do seems to have large ports which requires a lot of revs. And then it is the Pierce casted head bare or refined by SC. Bare, it has some obvious sharp edges that easily is smooth out. Branded SC, I guess it is good.

I might be a nerd but I guess you loose the characteristic "mini sound" if you abandon the siames exhaust port configuration.

I've never really looked hard into 7 port heads, but surely it really requires a cam designed specifically for it to work properly, I've only ever seen them used with 5 port cams.
People often seem to struggle to get decent results from 7 port, maybe it just difficulties with SC's injection management that people seem to struggle with.

I don’t want to derail your thread away from the 8 port, so have a look at Sonik and Northernpower’s posts on 7 ports if they’re of interest.

for an 8 port you need to be aware that you need to swap the cam as the valve order is different, and as a result of this there can be conflict between the cab and con rods,  i belive you can get away with it on low lift cams, but usually thats not what your looking to use when fitting an 8 port... the fix is S crank and rods. or a set of H beam rods that will clear the cam.
