Which synthetic oil do people recommend?
Do not come with there is none, I do not buy that what was known as the best 60 years ago, still is the best. I do belive that oil technology has advanced a lot the last 60 years.

that may be, but in the particular case of the A series engine you do have to remember the oil is also working as gearbox fluid, so possibly the requirements of the oil aren't the same as lot of other more modern engines which benefit from the synthetic oils

at least that's how I understand it.. reading followup comments with interest

I am aware of the specific needs in a A series engine/gearbox when it comes to oil. However, the available mineral oils are not NOS so why shouldn't there be synthetic ones with the same aim available? And if not, maybe some synthetic oil with additives?

I don't pretend to be any sort of expert on the matter, far from it, my point really was that the requirements of combined engine + 'box is fairly unique in motoring terms, so it's quite possible that oil manufacturers didn't see it as worthwhile investing the resources, that was all

if there is such a thing though and someone comes along with with tried and tested recommendations other than those on page 1 I'll definitely make a note of it for when it comes to putting oil in mine ( a way off yet )

If it's an automatic I'd recommend a 10w 40 semi synthetic JASO MA2 spec.

An oil designed for motorcycles with wet clutches.

I use:

Opie Oils do one or two others.

Well apart from 99% of motorcycles, which also have to contend with dog box's and wet clutches, I say 99% because I think Harley big twins still use a separate gearbox.

Since it hasn't been answered as to what transmission I will now respond anyway and maybe others will be looking for the answer for autos too.

for Autos I am running 15w40 Mineral Diesel oil. I look for ones with the Allison C4 spec as that will mean it is ok for wet clutches. I am also thinking of using farm/tractor oil as it is probably very similar and possibly even better for it.

Manual or automatic?

should be the question people are asking.

Apologies, it is a manual gearbox.

Would the recommended oil change with the engine capacity for a 1430cc engine?

Have you actually done any research or any searching of this forum? it's a question that's never been asked.

Halfords 20w/50 for classics, seems fine for a manual car, despite not being an overall fan of Halfruads.

I'm using that too. Seems fine. I like the green colour because it reminds me of Duckhams Hypergrade. And mine is still green after about 400 miles which I'm rather pleased about.

I ran an mg metro on mobil 1 10-60, for about 40k miles. I found it maintained oil pressure even after a good long thrash up the motorway. It would drop a little as the revs dropped when I slowed down but it would soon recover completely. Doing that with mineral oil would kill it and even when cooled down it didn't recover fully. However, I'm convinced it cauused all the oil seals to harden and washed the grease out of the primary gear so it developed oil leaks. I still have that engine and it will be going into my mini traveller but since it won't be driven as hard and I don't want it to leak oil I'll be running 20-50 mineral.

I see that no one mentions or recommends Millers classic anymore. With the fame it had in the past... To me in particular, after a year, the Classic sold by Mini Spares seems like a regular oil. While it is new and in the first few months, it is not bad. Now with 11 months of use, I notice that it does not have the viscosity of the beginning and some gears are a little scratchy. Of all the oils I used, VR1 and Comma seem the best to me.
