They must be VERY thin bolts.... but if you've got them, why not. I suspect the roller pins may be of a more durable metal than a common or garden bolt. However, the entire system is yet another sadistic perversion from the good folks at BL...

that's what I mean about drilling them out a little but what is it, M4?  you'd have to be really slapping that gearstick about with a severe lack of mechanical sympathy to break through one of those .. or be using a really cheap **** bolt

The roll pins grip in the sleeve, so any movement will be between the rod ends & the pin. More surface area to resist wear & the shorter contact length will allow more angular movement for less linear slack, that'd make the selector more sloppy. I think we'd be whinging more about rusted threads than awkward pins.

The holes are 7/32" if memory serves, that's near 5.5 mm. There's no standard screw near these sizes, if you do fit something in there that's not tight in the holes, as others have said, it will result in a very disappointingly sloppy shifter. The other thing you'll find is over time is that the Roll Pin Hole in the Input Shift Shaft will burr and flare, making it even more sloppy and damaging the Shaft. To repair it, it's about the last part that you can get to from the Gearbox when pulling them down. You might be tempted to drill he holes out to 6 mm or 1/4" but you'll find the Sleeve Coupling is VERY hard and it won't drill with standard drill bits. Fit Roll Pins.

hmm.. these are fair points, when you mention burring and flaring is that as a result of the bolt thread ,  in which case perhaps a smooth pin instead.. and machining that to the right diameter wouldn't be too difficult, but of course it needs to be retained with a clip or split pin or something

I do like the quick release item mentioned on page one but also fair point made about the spring clips getting looser ..  I know this is edging closer and closer to 'why not just use the roll pins then' which is fair enough but there's just something about that whole setup which just seems a bit rubbish, it's wobbly, it's awkward to fit and remove the pins, and surely something better can be done (has been done?) with a lathe and some time and effort

anything that makes gear changes less like stirring porridge is a good thing obviously

No, it will just flatten the threads with little damage to the holes from them. The Burring and Flaring will come about from the loose fit. ie, if it's tight, like a Roll Pin is, then this doesn't occur.
