SORN isn’t needed if your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998
If your vehicle's road tax ran out before SORN was introduced, you do not need to declare SORN. Neither will you receive any tax reminders.

It would only come under the SORN system after it is re-taxed and put back on the road for the first time since the above date.

Why not just apply by post if online or phoning is not working for you?

You can download the V62 Document required here:-

https://www.gov.uk/g...ion-certificate

Then print it out if you have a printer (or local libraries usually have a printer),

Fill in your details and post to DVLA address above (or local main post offices that can do car tax usually have paper copies of the forms).

Are you sure all details you have now are the same as on the lost V5 log book?

eg. Name and address on the old lost V5 must match your current address, so if you have changed address since you must inform DVLA of the change or they won't issue a new V5.

Change your address online

Use this service to change the address in your log book to a new UK address.

This service is available from 7am to 8pm.

To use this service, you must be the vehicle’s ‘registered keeper’.

When I couldn't put a cherished registration on to a vehicle online, I rang the DVLA and they were very helpful.

I couldn't get the chipex to work, and I registered and logged in. I must be doing some thing wrong.

I answered this on Friday but the post seems to have gone the same way as my log book.

However, I tried the DVLA phone number, 0300 790 68021, which, after several choice lists, got me in the inevitable queue and I waited and waited.

In the end our phone (landline) went flat battery and I lost the connection.

Tried again later but got the message, "we can't take your call, try later"

With the value of hindsight, the start of the month is car taxing time and they must be overwhelmed.

I'll give it a week or so and try again.

Will report back again when I find out more

Thanks for the advice so far.

Regards.

I have downloaded the V62 forms and will try that, thanks mab01uk for the advice.

We couldn't remember if, I or my wife were the registered keeper so I have done two forms and added an explanation letter so hopefully this will work.

Have not changed our address.

I had, for some reason (old age perhaps), missed this on the DVA site but when it came up with can't continue on the "online" method I thought there might be something else wrong.

Sending it of Monday, will come back when I know more.

Thanks again.

Regards.
